From Wikizilla, the kaiju encyclopedia

Yu-Gi-Oh! (遊☆戯☆王 Yūgiō, Japanese for "King of Games") is a multimedia franchise which started as a manga series by Kazuki Takahashi in 1996. The franchise revolves around trading cards, some of which are inspired by Godzilla and related franchises. The most well-known instance of that is the "Kaiju" archetype, featuring references to not just Godzilla, but also Gamera and Ultraman.

In the TV series

The following is a list of references to Godzilla and related franchises in the many Yu-Gi-Oh! series. The sole appearances of cards which are based on kaiju are not included.

  • In "The Violent Battle - A Game of Darkness", an episode of Toei's Yu-Gi-Oh!, the illusion monsters that Yugi creates after the Game of Darkness are given Godzilla's roar.
  • In "Deja Duel! - Part 2", an episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, a superhero toy named Dyna Man makes an appearance. It is based on Kagaku Sentai Dynaman and the Ultra series. The toy is unnamed in the Japanese version of the episode.

(アルマザウルス Aruma Zaurusu)
May 27, 1997
("Arena #2" )
"Armorsaurus" is a Capsule Monster Chess piece that first appeared in the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga series. It bears some resemblance to Anguirus, as both are stout armadillo-like dinosaurs with spikes on their head and carapace, and both are brown in most iterations. Armorsaurus also can curl up in a ball, although this ability of his preceded Anguirus'.

Great Moth
(グレート・モス Gurēto Mosu)
February 2, 1998
("The Ultimate Great Moth" )
"Great Moth", in addition to being a giant moth monster, also bears some similarities to Mothra in its wing pattern and shape, especially in the Bandai design. The anime non-card design's wing pattern appears more similar to Mothra's than those from the card artworks. In 2026, a counterpart of the card based on Aqua and/or Light Speed Mothra, "Great Moth Alternative", would be released.

The name of this "Kaiju" Monster Card is derived from Rodan's Japanese name, Radon (ラドン). Its head may be loosely based on Gyaos, while the rest of its body appears to be based on Ultraman Belial (eyes and claws) and Dark Lugiel (spiked body and color) from the Ultra franchise. Its self-copying ability, as seen in the artwork of "Kaiju Capture Mission", is based on that of the Baltans.

This "Kaiju" Monster Card appears to draw inspiration from both the Legion and Iris. Being a Machine Type, the monster consists of inorganic material, just like the Legion being made of silicon. It is also depicted as having seemingly crashed into the city from space, further referencing the Legion. Most of the design seemingly takes inspiration from Iris and the rest from the Legion, with both of them having a similar mouthless head shape and a single eye in the center, while also having some insectoid features such as mandibles. (Shining Victories )
This "Kaiju" Monster Card is very obviously based on Mechagodzilla, and is a robotic counterpart of "Dogoran, the Mad Flame Kaiju", a card based on Godzilla. Its effect of equipping 1 "Kaiju" Monster Card to itself from either the player's hand or Graveyard in order to gain ATK is a reference to Kiryu being built on top of the bones of First Generation Godzilla.

If certain conditions aren't met, the player takes 2700 damage, the equivalent of "Gadarla's" ATK. It is related to the "Kaiju" archetype.

The artwork of this Rush Duel Monster Card heavily draws inspiration from Aqua and/or Light Speed Mothra. It is a counterpart of "Great Moth", just like Aqua and Light Speed Mothra are one of Mothra Leo's many forms.

Notes

  1. The kanji 胡蝶姉妹 would normally be read as Kochō Shimai, but the furigana ファレノプ・シスターズ indicates that in this instance it is instead read as Farenopu Shisutāzu.
  2. Unofficial English translation.
