Giant ants appear in the 1997 Random House Godzilla novel Godzilla Invades America by Scott Ciencin.
Behavior
The ants were tactical but ruled by vestigial instincts. Due to their cybernetics, they felt no hunger but their foraging instincts still compelled them to hoard food. This included humans who they captured alive and imprisoned within the research facility that created them. Sleeping, shrunken members of the swarm were scattered outside areas where humans were kept captive, making it impossible for anyone to leave without stepping on an ant and waking the entire group.
Origin
Created in a research facility in the Nevada Desert close to Las Vegas, the same technology that created the giant arthropods Kamacuras, Kumonga and Sasori was implanted in these ants.

Godzilla Invades America
The result of an American research facility experimenting with means of size manipulation through nanotechnology, the cyborg ant colony overran the facility that created them and turned it into their new nest. Despite lacking the need to feed, their instinct to store food remained, which lead to the ants capturing a number of people and stashing them away under guard, including one of their creators, Claire Detweiller. Psychic child Tomoyuki and kaiju researcher Dr. Hiro Kuroyama came upon the facility with the military when investigating the origins of the giant arthropod kaiju. After freeing Claire and being informed of the situation upon running afoul with the ants, they discovered the facility's cryotechnology reversed the molecular change inflicted upon the ants, which would return them to normal size. After evading the ants through the facility's smaller corridors and ventilation, they managed to get cryoblasters that expelled low-temperature coolant at a high volume. Several ants attempted to attack the group, but were fended off and shrunk by use of the cryotechnology, cluing the military in on how the same technology on a larger scale might be effective against creations like Sasori, Kumonga, and Kamacuras.
Abilities
Size manipulation
Size-changing technology in their cybernetics can change between the size of a normal ant to about the size of a 12 foot van. It is implied by conversation with one of the researchers held captive by the ants, Claire Detweiler, that this automatically engages if someone steps on an ant that is in their smaller form.
Hungerless nature
It is stated that their partly-mechanical nature makes them unable to feel hunger or need to eat.
Weaknesses
Extreme cold permanently removes their ability to change size, and shrinks them back to the size of a normal ant if they are in a larger form. While they have no need to eat, they do require sleep. This allowed their human captives to catch them off-guard and escape.
