The Kiryu series (機龍シリーズ,   Kiryū shirīzu)[1] or Kiryu chapter (機龍編,   Kiryū-hen),[2] also nicknamed the Kiryu Saga by English-speaking fans, is the collective name of the 2002 and 2003 Godzilla films Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, directed by Masaaki Tezuka. The films hold the distinction of being the only entries in the greater Millennium series to share continuity with one another, as well as being the only ones to share continuity with any prior Toho film besides the original Godzilla. The Kiryu series is centered around the titular Kiryu—an incarnation of Mechagodzilla constructed around the bones of the first Godzilla—and comprises a vast universe which connects the events of older Toho kaiju films to its own. While Tezuka ultimately never directed another Godzilla film, ideas for a third Kiryu film or other further uses of the Kiryu character were proposed.
