A historical drama, also called period drama or period piece, is a film or other work which is set in the past. This may include historically accurate tellings of real events, or fictional occurrences set in real time periods. A specific subgenre of historical dramas is the Japanese jidaigeki (時代劇, lit. period drama), entries of which are often set during the Edo period of Japan between 1603 and 1868. Film company Daiei (later acquired by Kadokawa) were known for the blends of jidaigeki and tokusatsu which were produced by their Kyoto studio beginning in the 1950s, notably including the Daimajin and Yokai Monsters trilogies. Other companies, such as Toho and Toei, have also experimented with such a fusion.
