Cloverfield, sometimes called the Cloververse,[1] is an American science-fiction horror anthology series created by J.J. Abrams which is produced by Bad Robot Productions and primarily distributed by Paramount Pictures. The franchise is known for its intricate alternate reality games (ARG) which tie into each entry, chiefly involving the fictional Japanese deep-sea drilling company Tagruato and its subsidiaries.
Beginning with the 2008 found footage giant monster film of the same name, the Cloverfield franchise shifted from its Godzilla influences to a sci-fi anthology with the largely unconnected 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016. This was followed up two years later by the Netflix Original The Cloverfield Paradox, which established the films' continuities as existing in a multiverse. A fourth entry, a direct sequel to the original Cloverfield, is in development.

Every entry in the series thus far has featured monsters serving major and minor roles. The following is a list of all monsters and creatures that have appeared in each film thus far.
- Clover - A giant amphibious sea monster who appeared in Cloverfield. It was awakened by Tagruato's deep-sea drilling[2] and made landfall in New York City, wreaking havoc before ultimately being killed by the U.S. military's Hammerdown Protocol. It makes a brief appearance once again in The Cloverfield Paradox, where it is heavily implied to be an extradimensional creature that was brought into different realities via the activation of the Shepard Particle Accelerator.
- Human Scale Parasites - Dog-sized skin mite-like creatures that dwell on Clover's body. During its attack on New York City, they descend to the streets below to hunt humans with a lethal bite that causes those affected by it to spontaneously explode.
- Alien spaceships - Biomechanical alien creatures that appear during the climax of 10 Cloverfield Lane after launching an invasion of Earth. Their arrival coincided with a red flash, as witnessed by astronauts aboard the International Space Station and Emmett DeWitt. One was destroyed by Michelle via Molotov cocktail, but more are seen as she drives to Houston, Texas.
- Mutant space worm - Quadrupedal scout creatures deployed from the biomechanical spacecrafts to track and hunt humans that avoided gassing from the ships, one of which hunts Michelle.
Trivia
- Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, writers of the 2018 Paramount horror film A Quiet Place, revealed in a 2018 article from Slashfilm that they considered pitching the film to be part of the Cloverfield franchise. However, the idea was shot down by Paramount, who thought the script could stand on its own.[3] Interestingly, A Quiet Place director and actor John Krasinski was in "early talk" to star in God Particle, the spec script that would ultimately become The Cloverfield Paradox.[4]
- Another Slashfilm article from 2018 reported that the Bad Robot production Overlord would be the fourth entry in the franchise.[5] Abrams himself later clarified that the film was not connected, but Bad Robot was developing a direct sequel to Cloverfield.[6]
