Yokai (妖怪 is a broad term used in Japan to define supernatural or spiritual creatures, as well as a series of over several thousand Japanese monsters, many of which are included in in Japan's rich and varied mythology. A Yokai may appear similar to an animal, an object, or even a human, or they may take the form of an energy-based being. Yokai, lit. 'ghost', 'strange apparition')
Yokai are typically masters of disguise, and each Yokai tends to have a large range of abilities that befit its general appearance. Some Yokai are friendly towards humans, while others are mischevious or even aggressive towards humans and other animals.
Yokai feature prominently in some Tokusatsu films, with Daimajin being the most familiar example. Daiei's Yokai Monsters series is notable for its extensive use of these creatures.
