Yokai (妖怪,   Yokai, lit. 'ghost', 'strange apparition') is a broad term used in Japan to define supernatural or spiritual creatures, as well as a series of over several thousand Japanese monsters, many of which are included in in Japan's rich and varied mythology. A Yokai may appear similar to an animal, an object, or even a human, or they may take the form of an energy-based being.

Yokai feature prominently in some Tokusatsu films, with Daimajin being the most familiar example. Daiei's Yokai Monsters series is notable for its extensive use of these creatures.
