- This page covers the 2001 Godzilla design. For the Godzilla incarnation, see Godzilla (GMK).
The GMKGoji (GMKゴジ is the Jīemukeigoji)Godzilla suit used in the 2001 Godzilla film Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.
Name
The GMKGoji nickname comes from Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack's abbreviation, GMK, and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).
The SokogekiGoji nickname comes from Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack's Japanese title, specifically sōkōgeki (総攻撃), meaning all-out attack, and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).
Detail
For Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, director Shusuke Kaneko hired Fuyuki Shinada to design a more traditional Godzilla than the MireGoji design featured in the previous two films, using elements from the ShodaiGoji and the MosuGoji.[1] The skin of the suit returned to its original texture and charcoal-black color, while the dorsal plates became smooth and bone-white again. Significant muscle was given to this suit and the pointer and thumb claws were made longer than the other two. Most distinctly, the eyes are white and surrounded by grey veins, to suggest a more malevolent and mystical Godzilla, akin to the design of Ghost Godzilla, an unused kaiju. When Godzilla charges and expels his atomic breath, the dorsal plates on the suit shift slightly via a mechanism on its back.
The GMKGoji is the tallest Godzilla suit ever used in a film and the second-tallest suit in the history of the Godzilla franchise, only surpassed by the Godzilla suit from a 2014 Snickers commercial. Shinada and Takuya Yamabe built four Godzillas in total for the film: a regular suit capable of moving its mouth and neck, a more expressive performance suit, an animatronic for close-ups, and an altered MireGoji attraction suit for the scene where King Ghidorah blasts Godzilla into Yokohama Bay. Actor Mizuho Yoshida drew from Haruo Nakajima's fight scenes in King Kong vs. Godzilla and Kenpachiro Satsuma's walking technique when portraying Godzilla, while also taking advantage of the improved motion of the suit's claws.

Trivia
- This suit directly inspired the appearance of the Third Street Godzilla design used for Godzilla's cameo appearance in Always: Sunset on Third Street 2.
- This suit is the only main series Godzilla design to lack any irises or pupils.
- Originally, the suit was meant to lean forward and possess a horizontal posture like a theropod dinosaur, similar to the TriStar Godzilla, but the suit's build made it impossible. Instead, it possesses a pronounced hunched posture, similar to Godzilla Junior.
- The performance suit possesses mechanisms that move all three rows of Godzilla's dorsal plates, though the effect is difficult to see on film.
- The GMKGoji is the only Godzilla suit in the Millennium series to not be portrayed by actor Tsutomu Kitagawa. Instead, it is portrayed by Mizuho Yoshida, whose larger stature allowed him to operate the suit more effectively. Yoshida had previously portrayed the Mother Legion in Gamera 2: Attack of Legion, Desghidorah in Rebirth of Mothra, and Dagahra in Rebirth of Mothra 2, and would go on to portray Zedus in Gamera the Brave.
