The MegaroGoji (メガロゴジ) is the Godzilla suit design used in the 1973, 1974, and 1975 Godzilla films Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and Terror of Mechagodzilla, as well as the 1973 Toho television series Zone Fighter.

Name

In Godzilla vs. Megalon, the MegaroGoji's name comes from another kaiju's name, Megalon (メガロ,   Megaro), and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

In Zone Fighter, the ZoneGoji's name comes from the kaijin, Zone Fighter (ゾーン,   Zone), and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the MekaGoji's name comes from another kaiju's name, Mechagodzilla (メカゴジラ,   Mekagojira), and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

In Terror of Mechagodzilla, the MekaGyakushuGoji's name comes from the film's Japanese title, specifically Mekagojira and gyakushū (メカゴジラ and 逆襲), meaning Mechagodzilla and counterattack, respectively, and Goji, which comes from Godzilla's Japanese name, Gojira (ゴジラ).

Detail

The MegaroGoji had a plain, streamlined body, a short neck and silver, puffy, pillow-like designed dorsal plates. The face looks more friendly than usual, with a rounded muzzle, oversized brows and huge brown eyes. The eyes of the MegaroGoji were movable and had movable eyelids. Compared to other Godzilla designs, this suit also has an more upright stance than previous suits, a characteristic that would be kept for the Godzilla suits made in the Heisei era.

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the MegaroGoji suit was mostly the same but with some changes to the face; with more detail added in the muzzle and the brows being reduced in size, making this Godzilla suit look less playful than in the previous movie, Godzilla vs. Megalon. The eyes became black, and did not move nor did they have movable eyelids. This suit is also called the MekaGoji (メカゴジ). A second suit with a wider mouth was used for Mechagodzilla's Fake Godzilla disguise, and a third suit with a pointier snout was used for water sequences.

In Terror of Mechagodzilla, two MegaroGoji suits were used. The first and main suit received a further face lift; the muzzle was reduced and given more detail, the height of the brows was lowered and the eyes were reduced, thus giving it a semi-comical and semi-mean look. The second suit instead received a more pronounced crest and its eyes were covered up a bit to give a similar look. The eyes did not move nor did they have movable eyelids, and the rest of the body was unchanged. These suits is also called the MekaGyakushuGoji (メカ逆襲ゴジ). Fake Godzilla's suit was also used for the last scene of Godzilla advancing in the ocean.

Trivia

• The MegaroGoji is the only Godzilla suit to have been played by a different actor in every one of its film appearances.
• Like the MosuGoji suit in Mothra vs. Godzilla, a take in which the MegaroGoji suit was accidentally set on fire made it into Terror of Mechagodzilla. It also catches fire in episode 4 of Zone Fighter, though to a lesser degree.
• The MegaroGoji was one of two suits used to portray Mechagodzilla's Fake Godzilla disguise in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. Fake Godzilla was primarily portrayed using a separate Godzilla suit that bore noticeable physical differences from the MegaroGoji, while MegaroGoji was used for Fake Godzilla's rampage around Mount Fuji and its battle with Anguirus prior to the metal being exposed on its arm, as well as in close-ups. The Fake Godzilla suit was later used as a stand-in for the MegaroGoji in the final scene of Terror of Mechagodzilla when Godzilla wades out to sea.
• For shots using the MegaroGoji after the battle with Anguirus, the suit's arm was slightly modified to reveal the exposed piece of metal. This detail was removed once the suit was used to portray the real Godzilla.
• Five years after Terror of Mechagodzilla was released, Toho produced a replica of this suit for publicity events surrounding Godzilla's 25th anniversary. Haruo Nakajima donned it in 1983 for a photo shoot with the Japanese magazine Uchusen.
