Godzilla (ゴジラ is a pinball machine manufactured by Stern Pinball in collaboration with Gojira)Toho International. It was released around the world beginning in 2021. Based on the Godzilla films of the Showa era, the Godzilla pinball machine features numerous monsters from the era along with authentic video and audio from ten Showa Godzilla films. It also features the song "Godzilla" by Blue Öyster Cult as its title music.
Story
When the evil Xiliens take control of the monsters King Ghidorah, Gigan, Megalon, Ebirah, and Titanosaurus and unleash them on Earth, Godzilla joins forces with his trusted allies Mothra, Rodan, and Anguirus to stop the aliens and save the planet. The four Earth monsters face off against the Xiliens and their monsters before facing the aliens' ultimate weapon: Mechagodzilla.
Gameplay
The player assumes the role of Godzilla in Tokyo, where the invading Xiliens are preparing to summon a monster in their attempt to subdue and colonize Earth for its natural resources. (In some playthroughs, they demand Earth's pinball machines instead.) Shooting either ramp progresses the initial story; after two shots, shooting the scoop starts the first Kaiju Battle. The Xiliens offer the player their choice of monster to fight from Gigan, Megalon, Ebirah, and Titanosaurus. Each monster has their own battle mode with a sequence or set of shots to hit, with each shot landing a blow on the monster to score points. The final blow causes the monster to flee, awarding Godzilla control of Tokyo.
The player can also complete additional objectives to cause further destruction to the city for additional points and modes:
- Two of the Tank inserts are lit at random. Make either corresponding shot to destroy a tank, which also causes a new tank to spawn at another shot. Destroying enough tanks qualifies Tank Attack Multiball mode, which can then be started by shooting the scoop.
- There are three power line targets, two located at the front corners of the building and one to the right of the right ramp. Hit them when their lights are flashing to damage the power lines. Dealing enough damage starts Tesla Strike mode.
- Shoot the captive ball when the Bridge Attack insert below it is lit to damage to the bridge. Destroying the bridge entirely qualifies Bridge Attack Multiball mode, which can then be started by shooting either ramp.
After fighting a monster, win or lose, the player can shoot the scoop to leave Tokyo and head to New York, Paris, or London, unlocking additional Kaiju Battles to play as well as giving Godzilla a new set of tanks, power lines, and a bridge to destroy. The player may travel to the three additional cities in any order, but cannot return to a city after leaving it.
Completing all three of the above objectives at least once each and fighting at least one monster unlocks Planet X as a choice in the City Select menu. Choosing Planet X starts Planet X Multiball mode to battle against the Xiliens.
Additional side objectives, not tied to the city, can be completed for even more scoring and modes:
- Hit the building with the ball to damage it, either by hitting the ground floor directly or sending the ball through the upper floor via a ramp shot. Destroy the building to qualify Godzilla Multiball mode at the building's front entrance.
- Shoot the right spinner enough times to bring Mechagodzilla online and bring up its Defense Neo Barrier, then shoot the light blue lit targets in front of Mechagodzilla to disable the Defense Neo Barrier. Finally, shoot the right spinner once more to start Mechagodzilla Multiball mode.
- Hitting the pop bumper enough times or rolling through the lane below it causes the Saucer Attack arrow to start flashing, indicating a Xilien flying saucer being sighted. Shoot the pop bumper before time runs out to destroy the saucer. Destroy three saucers for an extra ball. Destroy six saucers then hit the pop bumper once more to start Saucer Attack Multiball mode.
Godzilla also has three allies, which can be summoned at the scoop after reaching various milestones. Most notably, each of the four initially available Kaiju Battles award an ally summon halfway through the engagement. Upon earning an ally summon, one of the three ally inserts will start to flash; the right flipper button cycles the flashing light through the available allies in counterclockwise order. Shooting the scoop summons the flashing ally, or allies if more than one summon was earned since the last scoop shot. The three allies and their effects are:
- Rodan: All scoring is doubled for 60 seconds.
- Mothra: The next time a ball is lost down the left outlane, Mothra saves it, replacing it with a new ball that is automatically plunged into play.
- Anguirus: Once summoned, press the action button during any multiball to add a ball to the multiball and start a brief ball save.
Once an ally's ability is used up, that ally becomes available again on the next summon. For example, if the player summons Mothra then earns another ally summon, the player can pick Mothra a second time if and only if Mothra's ability has been used up to save the ball.
