Magic: The Gathering, often shortened to just Magic, is a collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. The first of its kind, its popularity has only grown, with an estimated 35 million players worldwide in 2018.[1] On April 2, 2020, Wizards of the Coast announced that their upcoming Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set would feature characters from the Godzilla franchise. All are special versions of regular cards, whose names are printed beneath each kaiju's name. The English set will include 16 Godzilla Series Monster cards, with an additional three in the Japanese set.[2] It was released on April 17, 2020, in Asia and on May 15, 2020, in the rest of the world. In addition, Godzilla was featured in a Secret Lair Drop Series, a set of five of the six basic land types and a code for a digital Godzilla card sleeve on Magic: The Gathering Arena. The Godzilla Lands were only available for a 24-hour period starting on May 7 at 9 PM Pacific Time.[3]

Availability of Godzilla Series Monster cards

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths booster packs will not include Godzilla Series Monster cards. They can only be obtained in the following ways:[4]

  • Collector Boosters include one foil or non-foil Godzilla Series Monster card.
  • "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" is available exclusively in a Draft Booster Display purchased from WPN stores, in addition to a second foil Godzilla Series Monster card in a Box Topper pack.
  • One in 12 Japanese Draft Boosters contain a non-foil Godzilla Series Monster card, while one in 60 will have a foil Godzilla Series Monster card. "Mothra's Giant Cocoon", "Battra, Dark Destruction Beast", and "Mechagodzilla, Battle Weapon" will only be printed in Japanese.[5]
  • Participating game stores will include a free "Mechagodzilla, Battle Fortress" promo card with purchase of any Magic: The Gathering booster box starting June 5.[6]

  • The initial printing of SpaceGodzilla was called "Spacegodzilla, Death Corona," referencing his signature Corona Beam attack. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wizards of the Coast announced that future printings would be called "Spacegodzilla, Void Invader" instead.[7]
  • "Kogla, the Titan Ape", a regular card in the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set, is a clear reference to King Kong. The card's artwork shows him climbing a towering crystal, a woman in his hand, as war balloons surround him.[8]
