"Godzilla" is a song performed by the hard rock and heavy metal band Blue Öyster Cult in 1977, written in homage to the Godzilla series. Written by the band's lead guitarist and vocalist Buck Dharma, when performed live the song would bring on stage a Godzilla dummy and have the drummer wearing a mask of the kaiju during his solo. A cover of the song composed by Bear McCreary and performed by System of a Down's Serj Tankian was included in the soundtrack for the 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Brendon Small and Gene Hoglan of the band Dethklok from the Adult Swim animated TV series Metalocalypse also contributed to this cover.

Lyrics

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down

Helpless people on a subway train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town

Oh no, they say he's got to go
Go go Godzilla, yeah
Oh no, there goes Tokyo
Go go Godzilla, yeah

Oh no, they say he's got to go
Go go Godzilla, yeah
Oh no, there goes Tokyo
Go go Godzilla, yeah

Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla, Godzilla...

Oh no, they say he's got to go
Go go Godzilla, yeah
Oh no, there goes Tokyo
Go go Godzilla, yeah

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of man
Godzilla!

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of man
Godzilla!

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of man
Godzilla!

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of man
Godzilla!

Trivia

  • The Japanese dialogue that can be heard during the song translates to:

"Receiving breaking news! (臨時ニュースを申し上げます! Rinji nyūsu o mōshiagemasu!)
Receiving breaking news! (臨時ニュースを申し上げます! Rinji nyūsu o mōshiagemasu!)
Godzilla is headed towards the Ginza area! (ゴジラが銀座の方に向っています! Gojira ga Ginza no hō ni mukatteimasu!)
Please seek shelter as soon as possible! (大至急、避難してください Daishikyū, hinan shite kudasai!)
Please seek shelter as soon as possible! (大至急、避難してください Daishikyū, hinan shite kudasai!)"

  • Godzilla attacked Ginza again in the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One, with a similar radio message broadcasted as he made landfall.
  • In the 1990s, the song was used to promote various Godzilla movie marathons on the U.S. cable television channels TNT, the Sci-Fi Channel, and WGN.
  • In the 1997 novel Godzilla 2000, Raptor-One pilot Tobias Nelson plays Blue Öyster Cult songs before the plane's confrontation with Godzilla, including "Godzilla", drawing mixed reactions from the rest of the crew.
  • In response to this song's exclusion from GODZILLA: The Album, Blue Öyster Cult members Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma wrote and performed a parody titled "NoZilla."[1]
  • A new version of this song performed by Fighter Ishida and GYM with Japanese lyrics was released as part of the 50th Anniversary Godzilla Soundtrack Perfect Collection in 2006.
