Gamera (ガメラ) is a giant, flying, turtle-like gaurdian kaiju who stars in the 2023 anime series GAMERA -Rebirth-.

Development

For GAMERA -Rebirth-, Gamera was designed by Kan Takahama,[2] who previously designed and modeled Toto[3] in Gamera the Brave and designed Gamera for Katsuhito Ishii's 2015 short film.[4] A guiding principle of this Gamera's design was to make him akin to a "moving mountain,"[5] an intention which was also expressed by Ishii for the 2015 Gamera.[6]

Design

Gamera's appearence is heavily reminicent of the design from the short film GAMERA, specifically in the monster's posture, carapace shape, and head shape. However, this Gamera is a dark greenish-blue in color, with bright blue-green accents on his spiked plastron. He has large, bright green eyes and a pointed snout, a longer tail, as well as large hands. Similar to the Heisei incarnation of the character, this Gamera's front limbs transform into flipper-like wings when flying, with bright blue jets of flame blasting out from the leg holes of his shell.

Origin

100,000 years prior to the main events of GAMERA -Rebirth- in 1989, Gamera had a connection with an ancient civilization and fought against other kaiju.[7]

GAMERA -Rebirth-

Over Tokyo

In the summer of 1989, after Tokyo was struck by Gyaos, Gamera saved elementary school students Boco, Joe, Junichi, and Brody from the creatures when landing from the sky and firing a flame bullet at them. He crushed the small Gyaos and grabbed the out of the air, sustaining minimal damage from their Supersonic Scalpels. After the small creatures ahd been finishined off, the large Gyaos blasted Gamera with its own beam before Gamera returned fire with three shots, the third hitting Gyaos's wing. The flying monster swoops down, dodging another blast and having to circle back towards Gamera, charging its beam. It is interrupted by yet another fire ball, having to dodge and getting its leg incinerated in the process. Gyaos finally reaches Gamera, sinking its claws into his shoulder while pulling him around and firing its Supersonic Scalpel at point blank range. Gamera smacks Gyaos to the gorund, steps on its neck, and grabs its intact wing and leg with each arm, pulling with extreme force. Gyaos is able to break free of its adversary, begining to fly away, but Gamera yanks it back again before leaping and stomping on Gyaos's back. Gyaos attempts to counterattack with its energy weapon, but Gamera grabs its head, piercing its eye with his thumb-claw. He slams its head into the ground before grabbing it by the neck and hurling it over his shoulder. Gamera finishes off Gyaos with a single direct hit from a flame bullet, killing Gyaos. Several military jets then arrived and began firing missiles at him, forcing Gamera to fly away into the sky.

Abilities

Flight

Gamera is capable of flight at great speeds, seeming to propel himself using jets from his limbs. He was able to outmaneuver several missiles from a naval fleet.

Fire-breathing

After charging up with electricity, Gamera is able to blast a fiery projectile called Flame Shot (火焔弾,   Kaendan) from his mouth.[8]In Godzilla Battle Line, these projectiles are called Flame Bullets. Gamera tends to use these as a finsihing blow, and they are powerful enough to create very large explosions when they land, incinerate and vaporize entire body parts, and kill opponents in one direct hit.

Electrical Shockwave

When charging up the electricity on his chest, Gamera can discharge it in a massive shockwave of electricity. He used this to destroy oncoming missiles and disorient Zigra.

Physical abilities

Gamera appears to be a capable hand-to-hand combatant, using his claws to slash opponents, and was strong enough to lift and toss Jiger. Despite his size, Gamera is very agile, being very fast in both water and in the sky, and can even leap at his enemies.

Flaming Fist

Gamera is able to direct the energy he needs for his Flame Shots into his hands and create a burning effect. He uses this against Jiger to burn her from the inside out.

Shell Saw

By retracting all his limbs and head into his shell, Gamera can use his jets and become a giant buzzsaw.

Oryllium Cannon

As a final last ditch attack, Gamera is able to fire a beam of Oryllium based energy from his mouth capable of reaching into space. However, this comes at the cost of his life.

Reincarnation

Gamera, upon dying after using the Oryllium Cannon, Gamera leaves behind an egg which hatches into a new Gamera.

Trivia

  • While this Gamera is equal in body height to Showa Gamera, his body weight increased tenfold from the Showa incarnation. This is somewhat consistent with the increase in body weight between Gamera in the Heisei Trilogy and Avant Gamera.
  • The depiction of Gamera's neck glowing when he uses fireballs bears some resemblance to an unused idea of Shinji Higuchi's for Gamera the Guardian of the Universe (1995), where Gamera would split his mouth open and emit lights from his neck when using Plasma Fireballs.[9] This is also similar to the sequence of Godzilla's atomic breath by Higuchi in Shin Godzilla (2016). Moreover, Gamera's chest also glows,[5] similar to Toto when using the Toto Impact in Gamera the Brave.
  • Gamera's glowing eyes somewhat resemble those of the Gamera from the Showa series and the scrapped idea for Toto's eyes to glow green.[10]:143:150
  • The depiction of Gamera discharging electricity when spitting fireballs is similar to Godzilla Earth and Godzilla Filius's atomic breath in the GODZILLA anime trilogy, which was co-directed by Hiroyuki Seshita.
