Space Gyaos (宇宙ギャオス is a winged alien Uchū Gyaosu)kaiju which appeared in the 1969 Daiei Gamera film Gamera vs. Guiron.
Spawned by environmental disruptions stemming from a malfunction from the electronic brain that controlled the planet Terra, swarms of Space Gyaos became frequent pests to the two surviving Terrans. When a Space Gyaos threatened the Terrans' plan to feed on the brains of two kidnapped human boys, they summoned their guardian monster Guiron to deal with it. Guiron brutally dispatched the Space Gyaos by slicing it apart, though other members of the species remained nearby.
Name
Space Gyaos' name simply comes from placing "space" (宇宙 in front of uchū)Gyaos' name.
Development
Concept art of a flying squirrel-inspired monster named Monga was created for Gamera vs. Guiron, suggesting this creature was intended to fight Guiron. Presumably for budgetary reasons, Daiei opted to reuse the monster Gyaos from Gamera vs. Gyaos in the role. The Gyaos suit with extended wings from Gamera vs. Gyaos was painted silver and used to portray Space Gyaos, along with a hand-operated puppet ("Guignol") and a flying prop. The Space Gyaos costume was later reused in the "Godzilla vs. Gamera" stage show at the 1970 World's Fair.

Design
Space Gyaos looks virtually identical to the terrestrial Gyaos featured in Gamera vs. Gyaos, only its skin is silver and the orange stripes on its chest are reddish-brown.
Origins
Despite its striking resemblance and overall similarity to the terrestrial Gyaos which battled Gamera, Space Gyaos was a species of monsters spawned when the electronic brain controlling the planet Terra malfunctioned and altered the environment. Whereas the two surviving Terrans Barbella and Florbella assumed control of the monster Guiron and made him their guardian, Space Gyaos became a frequent pest that constantly menaced the two aliens, who often needed to call upon Guiron to defend them.
History
- Gamera vs. Guiron (1969)
Gamera vs. Guiron
A swarm of silver Space Gyaos had attacked the planet Terra, an undiscovered planet in Earth's solar system, being kept at bay only by the Terrans' guardian monster, Guiron. A Space Gyaos arrived near Guiron and tried to attack with its Ultrasonic Scalpel, but the beam was reflected by Guiron's blade-like head and instead sliced off Space Gyaos' right leg. Space Gyaos flew into the air in order to continue the fight, but in a swooping maneuver Guiron sliced off its wing. With its prey grounded and immobile, Guiron cut off Space Gyaos' other wing, then decapitated it and sliced it into pieces. Guiron picked up one of the segments and inspected it, deciding that Space Gyaos was not fit to eat, then simply threw the piece aside.
While introducing themselves to the young boys Akio and Tom, the Terrans were briefly interrupted by another Space Gyaos flying close to their base, prompting them to monitor the situation, observing several of them nearby. Later, after Gamera had killed Guiron, the planet was seemingly abandoned to the remaining Space Gyaos.
Abilities
Flight
Using their two massive wings, Space Gyaos are capable of flight at Mach 3.5.[2]
Ultrasonic Scalpel
Space Gyaos' primary means of attack is their Ultrasonic Scalpel (超音波メス, a 3-million-hertz blast of ultrasound which takes the form of a thin yellow beam. Chōonpa Mesu)[1][2] The beam is capable of slicing easily through Space Gyaos' own bodies, shown when Guiron reflected a blast back at one.
Weaknesses
Space Gyaos are vulnerable to their own Ultrasonic Scalpel, which severs one's leg after being reflected by the blade on Guiron's head. Guiron's blade is also lethal to Space Gyaos, being used to effortlessly kill one and slice it into pieces.

Gamera: The Time Adventure
A Space Gyaos briefly appears in the fifth level of Gamera: The Time Adventure. Like all monsters in the game, Space Gyaos is depicted exclusively through stock film footage as the player revisits key moments in Gamera's history. As such, Space Gyaos briefly wreaks havoc on Terra before being brutally dismembered by Guiron.
