Gamera the Giant Monster 5: Gamera vs. Guiron (大怪獣ガメラ5:大悪獣決闘ガメラ対ギロンの巻,   Daikaijū Gamera 5: Dai Waru-jū Kettō Gamera tai Giron no Maki, lit. "Giant Monster Gamera 5 - The Great Evil Beast Duel: Gamera vs. Guiron") is a 1995 manga adaptation of the 1969 film Gamera vs. Guiron created by Yoshimi Hamada. The fifth installment in a series of adaptations based on the Showa Gamera films, it was published by Tokuma Shoten as part of their Shonen Captain Comics line.

Plot

While stargazing with a telescope, the young children Akio and Tom witness a spacecraft landing on Earth. The next day, the boys journey to the ship’s location alongside Akio's sister Tomoko and find it unoccupied. The boys enter and accidentally activate it, sending them flying up into space. Gamera appears and attempts to save the kids, but the ship proves too quick for him to catch as it flies further out into the solar system.

Eventually, the ship lands in an advanced alien base on the planet Terra, where the children witness a battle between two giant monsters – a silver Space Gyaos and the blade-headed Guiron that emerged from the ground to fight it. The brief battle ends when Guiron uses its blade to cut Space Gyaos to pieces. Afterwards, the boys enter the base and meet two alien women named Barbella and Florbella - the Terrans - who are the last of their kind. They also reveal that they control the knife-headed Guiron, who acts as their guardian. While Barbella and Florbella appear friendly, they secretly plot to eat the boys' brains to gain their knowledge of Earth, intending to seek refuge on the planet themselves. They also learn of Gamera, who the children reveal is coming to bring them back to Earth, as Gamera is the friend to all children.

When Gamera arrives shortly thereafter, Barbella and Florbella unleash Guiron to battle him. The pair later attempt to flee the planet in their UFO after losing control of Guiron, only to be killed by the monster, who slices their ship in half during their escape attempt. In the following battle with Gurion, Gamera throws a missile directly into the side of Guiron’s head and detonates it with his Flame Jet, causing Guiron to explode. Gamera proceeds to rescue the children and safely bring them back to Earth.

Differences from the film

  • The Terrans do not shave Akio's head as they do in the film, leaving him with a full head of hair throughout the climax and ending of the manga. As such, Tom similarly does not lend him his hat at any point.
  • In the manga, after Guiron cuts their ship in half, Barbella is crushed by debris and left lying in a pool of blood, whereas in the film, she survives the crash - albeit with critical injuries despite appearing physically unharmed - before being mercilessly executed by Florbella.
  • In the film, after Gamera detonates the missile in Guiron's head, the explosion cleanly bisects Guiron's body in two with his head somehow remaining completely intact despite being the source of the explosion. In the manga, Guiron's entire body is blown to pieces, with his head also being torn apart in the process.
