Plot
The Fantastic Four—Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Girl, the Human Torch, and the Thing—rush to the Fantasticar as Godzilla approaches New York City. Mister Fantastic reflects on how the team flew to Tokyo during Godzilla's first attack, but by the time they arrived, Dr. Serizawa had already vanquished the beast with the Oxygen Destroyer, perishing in the process. They find Godzilla aiming his atomic breath at the base of the Statue of Liberty and leap into action. The Thing strikes first, slamming into Godzilla’s eye, followed by force-field blasts from the Invisible Girl and fireballs from the Human Torch. Mister Fantastic then forms a massive fist and fells the beast with a punch to his forehead. The superheroes are surprised at their apparent easy victory, but Godzilla quickly recovers, blasting the team with his atomic breath. The Invisible Girl barely manages to shield them.
Godzilla makes landfall, and Mister Fantastic steers the Fantasticar back to the team's home, the Baxter Building. He plans to charge the structure with the entire New York State power grid, electrocuting the monster when he attempts to destroy it. He also plans to sacrifice himself to do so, but the rest of the team refuses to leave him. The plan is successful in toppling Godzilla with a massive blast of electricity—and this time, he doesn't get back up. The Fantastic Four emerge from the rubble and are shocked to see flames filling the sky, which they last observed when the Watcher was trying to conceal Earth from the world-devourer Galactus. The effort is for naught, as a silver King Ghidorah, Galactus's new herald, descends on the city.
The exhausted Fantastic Four conclude they are no match for the space monster. The Silver Surfer, Galactus's former herald who turned against him, arrives and scans Ghidorah's memories. He finds that the three-headed dragon came to Galactus's attention and was empowered by the cosmic being after wiping out all life on his own planet. After discussing an alliance with the Fantastic Four, the Surfer instead transfers his Power Cosmic to the most powerful Earth being in the vicinity: Godzilla. Now powerless, the Surfer falls, with the Thing catching him.
Godzilla, brimming with power, attacks King Ghidorah with his atomic breath, but the herald is still stronger, blasting Godzilla backwards with a volley of gravity beams. The Fantastic Four joins the fight, with the Human Torch pairing his flame with Godzilla's atomic breath. Mister Fantastic slingshots the Thing into one of Ghidorah’s eyes. Heedless of the superhero, Godzilla then tackles Ghidorah, sending the Thing flying; the Human Torch catches him.
The team regroups, aiming to distract King Ghidorah so that Godzilla can press his advantage. The Invisible Girl proposes using her light-bending abilities not to make Godzilla invisible, but to make the Thing appear kaiju-sized. The gambit works, with the Human Torch flying high to voice the enlarged Thing to his teammate's chagrin. Ghidorah attempts to charge the projection, only to pass through it. Godzilla grips Ghidorah and combines his atomic breath with the Power Cosmic, burning away the space monster's silver coating.
In the aftermath, King Ghidorah returns to space, while Godzilla, having voluntarily given up the Power Cosmic to the Surfer, heads for the ocean. Mister Fantastic believes their victory is only temporary, however, and a showdown between Godzilla and Galactus seems inevitable.

Trivia
- Godzilla first met the Fantastic Four in issues #20-24 of Marvel Comics' Godzilla. Godzilla also appeared in The Thing #31, albeit without actually encountering the Thing himself. He also appeared alongside they and Galactus in the Godzilla Variant Cover for Fantastic Four (vol. 7) #25.
- This is the first story to show or even mention King Ghidorah's home planet, barring incarnations of the character who hail from Earth, as well as the first to state that he exterminated all other life on that planet.
- While this issue is non-canonical to the Marvel Universe's central Earth-616 timeline, a text box in the story places its events after Fantastic Four #50 (1966), due to the Silver Surfer being trapped on Earth after rebelling against Galactus.
- The Versus Variant Cover mimics a boxing poster. The matchup of "Godzilla vs. Thing" resembles Mothra vs. Godzilla's U.S. title, Godzilla vs. The Thing, while the tagline "One will fall" is shared with Godzilla vs. Kong.
- The Monster Homage Variant Cover by Nick Bradshaw appears to be based on the original cover of Fantastic Four #1. Also, the King of the Monsters Homage Variant Cover by James Harren pays homage to Godzilla #21, featuring the Thing in place of Devil Dinosaur.
