Description

As the ultimate monster icon returns to the big screen in the highly anticipated film Kong: Skull Island, Legendary Comics expands the story of King Kong with an exciting new comic series.

Following the events of the action-packed first issue, the adventure continues into the secrets of Kong’s past!

Plot

Aaron Brooks and his team have been welcomed into the Iwi's village. Riccio has quickly learned to speak the Iwi's language, and begins frequently drinking a medicinal brew the Iwi provide. One morning, Brooks speaks to Ato, the Iwi boy who is able to speak English. Brooks asks how Ato learned English, and Ato says that although his people prefer to communicate through actions and not spoken language, Hank Marlow taught his father English, and his father taught him. Brooks remarks how impressive the wall surrounding the Iwi village is, and when he taps on it an Iwi warrior immediately points a spear at him. Ato warns that his people built the wall to keep the "devils" out, and if just one post on the wall is damaged an entire section will collapse. Just then, Riccio beckons Brooks and Evelyn to follow him into the Iwi's temple to Kong inside the wreckage of the S.S. Wanderer. Brooks tells Riccio that they should stay focused on getting off Skull Island, but Riccio begins talking about how Atenatua, a great seer of the Iwi people, led the Iwi to Skull Island when they were refugees and foresaw the coming of the Awati, the people from the sky. Evelyn remarks that the "people from the sky" did indeed come, first Hank Marlow and Gunpei Ikari, then the 1973 Monarch expedition, and now them. Riccio then begins screaming out that he "understands," and can see Skull Island as it was millions of years ago. Riccio sees Kong's species in battle with countless Skullcrawlers, which laid waste to the island which was once the giant apes' paradise. Evelyn looks at the murals inside the temple depicting Kong fighting the Skullcrawlers, remarking that it was a battle for the top of the food chain. Riccio corrects her, saying it wasn't just evolution, but a literal war of gods. He then says that tomorrow the Iwi will bring them on a pilgrimage, following in the footsteps of Atenatua, where they will have a communion with Kong himself.

That night, Brooks, Evelyn and Medov talk among themselves while Riccio joins in a religious ritual with the Iwi. Evelyn points out that they are scientists, not holy believers, and Brooks agrees, saying their focus should be on finding Cejudo and the downed Osprey. Evelyn reminds them how Helen Karsten was ripped apart by the Death Jackals, while Medov says it is sinking in just how alone they all are. Brooks says that they and Karsten knew the risks when they signed up for the expedition, and they need to know for sure that Kong can keep order on the island and protect the rest of the world from the horrors that live here. He says that for now they should go along with the "pilgrimage" so they can observe Kong, and look for the Osprey at the same time. Evelyn and Medov both reluctantly agree. In the morning, Aaron and Evelyn are awakened by Ato, who tells them that Riccio wishes them to don ceremonial body paint before they begin the pilgrimage. Brooks attempts to decline, but Riccio arrives, covered in body paint, and insists that they honor the Iwi's tradition, to which they agree. As Brooks, Evelyn, Riccio, and Medov prepare to set off, Medov remarks that the Iwi's medicinal juice has helped him heal to the point that he can walk around freely. Riccio tells them that the juice and everything on the island is sacred to the Iwi, then begins walking. Eventually they reach a ship graveyard, and enter a Dutch shipwreck which contains more murals. Riccio begins yelling and holding his head in pain, and Brooks asks Ato what is wrong with him. Ato replies that "the devils of this island whisper into his ear," and begins to say that the elders believe him to be a great danger before Riccio screams that he is experiencing another vision. He sees the Iwi first arriving on Skull Island long ago, where they come face-to-face with the last two kongs: a male and a female. As Evelyn tries to calm Riccio down, he begins raving about how he has experienced two visions already while most people would be lucky to see one in a lifetime. Riccio storms out of the ship to continue the pilgrimage, with Brooks pursuing him. Ato calls out that their surroundings are dangerous and they must not wander, and true to his warning a Sirenjaw erupts from the water and attacks them. As Brooks and the others flee the creature, they come upon a downed helicopter and several crates containing munitions from the 1973 Monarch expedition. Brooks tells everyone to grab a weapon, with Ato protesting that weapons cannot help them. Just then, a thunderous roar is heard. Ato says it is the roar of Kong, and he is coming to battle the Sirenjaw. Riccio exclaims that they are saved, and that Kong is not simply the island's protector, but a god. Brooks grabs a gun and says that if that is the case, then they will go meet God.
