Gamera the Giant Monster 8: Gamera vs. 6 Great Monsters (大怪獣ガメラ8:宇宙最強!!6大怪獣軍団と大乱戦の巻,   Daikaijū Gamera 8: Uchū Saikyō! ! 6 Daikaijū Gundan to Dai Ransen no Maki, lit. "Gamera the Giant Monster 8: The Strongest in the Universe!! A Great Battle with the Six Great Monster Army") is a 1995 manga adaptation of the 1980 film Gamera Super Monster created by Yoshimi Hamada. The eighth and final installment in a series of adaptations based on the Showa Gamera films, it was published by Tokuma Shoten as part of their Shonen Captain Comics line.

Plot

The pirate spaceship Zanon, which plunders planets for their resources, is preparing to invade Earth. However, three Spacewomen from Peaceful Star M88 stand in their way, having taken up residence on Earth themselves. The captain of the Zanon sends his henchwoman, Giruge, and the monster Gyaos to stop them. The young child Keiichi and the Spacewomen summon the heroic monster Gamera, who Keiichi believes to be his pet turtle.

Gamera proceeds to defeat Gyaos, prompting the captain of the Zanon to send more monsters to Earth, including Zigra and Viras, though they are quickly stopped by Gamera. After Jiger is similarly defeated, Giruge attaches a Brainwave Control Device to Gamera to control him and make him attack Japan, though one of the Spacewomen is able to remove the device. Gamera goes on to battle Guiron and Barugon and defeats them. Giruge has a change of heart and is promptly executed by the captain of the Zanon. As the Zanon closes in on Earth, Gamera flies into space and directly into the ship, sacrificing himself to destroy it. The Spacewomen attempt to comfort Keiichi by assuring him that Gamera saved the world once and for all.

Differences from the film

  • In the film, after being shot by the Zanon, Giruge spends her dying moments with the Spacewomen and encourages them to find a way to stop the Zanon. In the manga, she is immediately vaporized by the blast, and is also killed wearing her civilian outfit whereas in the film she is in her superhero uniform.

Trivia

  • While every other Showa Gamera film has two separate manga adaptations - one released during the Shōwa period and one released during the Heisei period - this manga is the sole adaptation of Gamera Super Monster.
