Starship Godzilla[a] is an ongoing comic series by IDW Publishing. Part of a shared universe of Godzilla comics dubbed the Kai-Sei Era, it debuted on October 1, 2025, shortly after its companion series Godzilla and Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, and ran for six issues until March 18, 2026. Written by Chris Gooch and illustrated by Oliver Ono, the series is a "Mechagodzilla standalone series"[1] in which a team of spacefaring mercenaries embark on kaiju-related missions throughout the galaxy using their starship, the S.S. Mechagodzilla. A sequel series, Starship Godzilla: Invasion X, was teased in the final issue.

Development
IDW Publishing first revealed plans for a new Godzilla shared universe with the solicitation of Godzilla: The New Heroes in November 2024. The series was formally announced alongside Godzilla and Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone on February 19, 2025, as part of IGN's Fan Fest event.[5] The full synopsis was revealed later that day on IDW's website.[2]
According to editor Jake Williams in a Reddit AMA, the series' six issues had been "pretty much fully written" by early June 2025.[6] Williams and series author Chris Gooch later revealed more information about the project's beginnings in an interview with Fangoria, detailing that the project began life in January 2024 and revolved around "a group of raiders who had turned actual Godzilla into a frankenstein-esque starship"; though this proposal did not fit Toho guidelines, it was reworked to center around Mechagodzilla and integrated into the new shared universe IDW was developing at the time. Toho additionally rejected the idea of traditionally Earth-based Toho kaiju in space, limiting the series' kaiju roster to extraterrestrial monsters.[7]

- Starship Godzilla is IDW Publishing's second comic series focusing on a kaiju other than Godzilla, following Mothra: Queen of the Monsters, also released in 2025.
- While featuring human-like characters in the main cast, series editor Jake Williams confirmed that none of the characters in this series are from Earth.[8] This makes Starship Godzilla the second IDW Publishing comic with an entirely alien main cast, after the ninth issue of Godzilla Rivals, Vs. Spacegodzilla from 2023.
- The Simian character Lif sports a cap with the logo of More Inc., the antagonistic corporation featured in the 2024 graphic novel Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp, which was also illustrated by Oliver Ono. Ayan reads Monster Island Summer Camp in the fourth issue.
