Skull Island: The Birth of Kong is a four-issue comic book miniseries from Legendary Comics, serving as both a sequel and a prequel to Legendary Pictures' film Kong: Skull Island, which ran from April 12 to November 22, 2017. It is written by Arvid Nelson and illustrated by Mohammad Yazid, credited as "Zid." A paperback collecting all four issues was released on December 12, 2017. The comic chronicles an off-the-books Monarch return expedition to Skull Island in 1995 led by Houston Brooks' son Aaron. When Aaron and his team become stranded on the island, they make contact with the Iwi tribe and learn about Kong's past while facing the various dangerous creatures that inhabit the island. It was followed by a sequel comic, Kingdom Kong, in 2021 to tie in with Godzilla vs. Kong, with Zid returning as the artist. Legendary Comics reprinted it with Godzilla: Aftershock in Monsterverse Titanthology Vol 1 on May 11, 2021, and once again reprinted it along with all other Monsterverse graphic novels from Godzilla: Awakening to Kingdom Kong in Legends of the Monsterverse: The Omnibus on March 5, 2024.[1]

Description

Both a sequel and a prequel to the film, the series tells the story of a secret team of Monarch operatives returning to Skull Island to discover the truth behind Kong and the island he is born to protect. In doing so, they unlock an ancient history of monster conflict, witness the primal war between Kong and an otherworldly ecosystem of deadly new creatures, and finally reveal how this lonely god became the last of his kind.

Development

Skull Island: The Birth of Kong was quietly announced through a January 2017 listing in PREVIEWSworld under the title "Kong Skull Island Off Comic Series," with Arvid Nelson listed as the writer and Zid as the artist. A listing for the second issue the next month identified it as "Skull Island Birth of Kong."[2] Neither listing included cover art, only a poster for Kong: Skull Island.

A 10-page preview of the first issue became available on comiXology for free on March 10, 2017.[3] The same preview was included in the March 2017 Loot Crate DX.

On April 7, 2017, Entertainment Weekly published an article revealing the cover art for the first issue.[4] At the same time, Legendary Pictures' social media accounts posted a trailer for the series.[5]

Trivia

  • The trade paperback version of Skull Island: The Birth of Kong includes several Monarch documents not present in the individual issues: an authorization to explore Skull Island, a thesis written by Bill Randa about the flora/fauna of the island, recon notes of several locations on Skull Island, and profiles of the Vinestrangler and Sker Buffalo. The Vinestrangler profile is notable for including the threat analysis that was obscured on the "Monarch Files 2.0" bonus feature on home video releases for Kong: Skull Island. The Sker Buffalo profile is nearly identical to the profile used in the film's marketing, with the addition of a note by Monarch researchers who fear that poachers would see the animals' massive horns as trophies.
