Godzilla: War for Humanity #5 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on May 1, 2024.[2]

Description

Godzilla alone?! Zoospora continues to spread its roots across the world, and with the kaiju task force nearly out of commission and Godzilla the only one left standing against an army of monsters, it looks like humanity is doomed! In a last-ditch effort, Yuko and Samantha begin to search for Zoospora's source and any clue to defeating the seemingly unstoppable monster![1]

Plot

As Zoospora drags Sky MOGUERA towards its mouth, Samantha apologizes to her mother, Dr. Yuko Honda, for stealing the craft. Phazon Fullchech refuses to send Super MOGUERA back into the field, citing its damaged nuclear reactor. Honda, desperate to save her daughter, resorts to force, drawing Colonel Elise Guerrero's pistol. Guerrero sides with Honda, telling Fullchech that they're equally doomed if Zoospora conquers Godzilla. Together with Dr. Johnny Wiggum, they return to Super MOGUERA's cockpit, slicing into Zoospora with the mech's chainsaw arm and causing it to release Sky MOGUERA. The aircraft attaches to the back of Super MOGUERA as it blasts Anguirus, Manda and Gorosaurus off Godzilla, then knocks Mothra into a building with its Gatling gun while Godzilla does the same to Rodan with his atomic breath. Minilla repels Gorosaurus with smoke rings, only to be grabbed by a Zoospora tendril; Super MOGUERA saves them by severing the tendril. Wiggum wonders if Zoospora possesses an underground brain or neural center miles from the monster they're currently fighting, giving Honda an idea. She leaves with Samantha in Sky MOGUERA, only telling the others that they're going to Mongolia.

Anguirus rolls into a ball and charges, toppling Godzilla, Super MOGUERA, and Minilla. Barry informs the pilots that another blow like that will detonate the mech's reactor. In Mongolia, Honda apologizes to Samantha over a fire for putting Minilla in harm's way and for brushing off her opposition to the plan. She realizes she's been acting far too much like her own mother, and promises to do better by her. In Tokyo, Zoospora grapples Godzilla while the other kaiju keep Super MOGUERA busy. Fullchech reveals a powerful cannon hidden inside the mech's chainsaw arm and prepares to unleash it against the fungus, but it fails to fire. With Super MOGUERA's reactor melting down, Barry urges the pilots to eject.

Honda again faces The Cave, who tells it that she finally understands why the Shobijin told her that she trusted too easily. The Cave confirms her suspicions that it cannot actually communicate with kaiju. The feelings it attributed to Godzilla about humanity being a virus were actually its own feelings - Zoospora's feelings. After millennia of peace, it has concluded that the only solution to the planet's current crisis is to exterminate humanity. She draws the pistol, but it hoists her into the air with a tentacle and she drops the weapon. As Zoospora brainwashes Godzilla, Super MOGUERA's pilots resolve to go out with a bang, flying towards Godzilla and allowing him to absorb the reactor's energy. Coming to his senses, Godzilla fires a massive green blast of atomic breath down Zoospora's throat at the same time that Samantha shoots The Cave point-blank. Both attacks punch straight through their targets, ending the threat. The Zoospora in Tokyo explodes, tipping Super MOGUERA over, and the pilots emerge from the mech to find mushrooms sprouting from its remains, some of them enormous. Zoospora's influence over the other kaiju ceases and they depart the city, with Godzilla chasing Gorosaurus with a shot of atomic breath. Barry reports that the original MOGUERA pilots have recovered as well.

Honda and Samantha land on a Tokyo rooftop in Sky MOGUERA, bringing them to eye level with Godzilla. Honda apologizes for exploiting his love for Minilla; he responds with a sneeze that covers her in green snot. Just then, her mother calls, but she tosses her phone away, wanting to keep this moment between herself and her daughter. A tendril seems to snake towards it. They watch as Godzilla and Minilla return home, with Minilla triumphantly holding up a giant crab.
