Godzilla: War for Humanity #1 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on August 16, 2023.[2]

Description

Godzilla saved us that day.” When Dr. Yuko Honda was young, she was chased by Hedorah, the smog monster, and thought it was all over…until Godzilla saved her! Now a respected professor and writer, she’s dedicated her life to showing that while Godzilla may be a monster, that doesn’t mean it and the other kaiju are enemies. Unfortunately, when a strange new monster emerges, her belief in the good of Godzilla will be put to the test. If Godzilla doesn’t defend them, what can humanity do against the might of ZOOSPORA?! Find out in this titanic tale written by Andrew MacLean (Head Lopper) with art by Jake Smith (Blood Force Trauma)![2]

Plot

In rural Japan, 10-year old Yuko Honda and her friend Megumi encountered the smog monster Hedorah, who was attracted by fumes released from a nearby volcano, but were saved by Godzilla. While Megumi's family was overjoyed to see her return safely, Honda's mother reacted coldly, a dynamic that would continue into her adulthood.

25 years later, in present-day San Francisco, Honda is now a professor in kaiju studies who gives lectures on Godzilla's benevolence. While onstage recounting her experience with Godzilla and Hedorah, she is interrupted by Phazon Fullchech, an intelligent but arrogant tech billionaire who views Godzilla as a threat to humanity. Phazon uses his phone to hack Honda's presentation and display footage from hours earlier, depicting Gorosaurus being escorted through a forest by tanks and Maser Cannons. Suddenly, the ground shook and split open, and from it emerged a strange new monster, Zoospora. With its fungal root-like tentacles and strong arms, Zoospora quickly overpowered Gorosaurus before spitting a strange gunk into his mouth. Phazon explains that Zoospora then disappeared, but within 24 hours reemerged on the other side of the globe and assailed Manda in a similar manner. Following these encounters, both Manda and Gorosaurus launched attacks on nearby cities, contrary to their peaceful natures. After the lecture ends, Phazon reveals that he has come to recruit Honda on behalf of a special anti-monster task force who are interested in taking down Zoospora.

Honda and Phazon travel to the task force headquarters. Before entering the command center, Honda argues with her mother over the phone, who sent Honda's daughter Samantha to San Francisco via plane before realizing she had left the city. Honda meets the Colonel Elise Guerrero, Dr. Johnny Wiggum, and another member, Barry. The group intensely debate the best way to deal with the threat of Zoospora; Phazon reveals that his company has created the giant robot MOGUERA to fight Godzilla, but is willing to repurpose it for Zoospora, while Wiggum suggests they use fire. They ultimately decide on MOGUERA, though Dr. Honda wishes for Godzilla to appear instead. Just then, the task force reveals that they have been monitoring Monster Island and have sights on Godzilla's location. On the island, Minilla is playfully chasing a giant crab, while Godzilla swims laps around the island. As Minilla reaches the shoreline, Ebirah emerges from the water and attacks him. Ebirah lifts Minilla in his claws with ease, but Godzilla surfaces and saves the little monster by tearing off Ebirah's claw. Honda realizes that for now, humanity is on its own.

Trivia

  • Godzilla: War for Humanity #1 marks Minilla's first appearance in an IDW Publishing comic. He was previously featured in an early concept sketch for Jeff Zornow's retailer incentive cover for Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #8, though he was absent from the finished comic.
  • This issue marks the debut of Zoospora, an original monster created specifically for the comic.
  • In Jake Smith's original artwork for the issue, the son of Godzilla bears a different design that more closely resembles Godzilla himself, possibly modeled after LittleGodzilla rather than Minilla, which is also visible on the original cover artwork. It is unclear if this was intended to be LittleGodzilla or simply a redesigned Minilla.
  • Phazon Fullchech references the social media site Twitter, which was renamed "X" less than a month before this comic was published.

Notes

  1. IDW's solicitation erroneously listed Fraser MacLean as the comic's writer.[1]
