"The Kingmaker" is the twenty-second issue of the comic series Konga, published by Charlton Comics in May of 1965. It features two comics—a main adventure starring Konga and a backup story called "The Giant Bug"—as well as a short story titled "Death Did A Double".

Plot

"The Kingmaker"

Everywhere in the world Konga found himself, he was met with violence and scorn. And yet for all of humanity's slights against him, Konga remained good-natured and kind-hearted in his unending quest for companionship and belonging. After a rest in the Arctic Circle, Konga made his way south. Elsewhere in the same area, former General Shol Rubat was being put to death by a firing squad. Konga slammed his hand between the guns and their would-be target, and finally enraged at humanity's treatment of himself and each other, he destroyed the castle where the firing squad had assembled. Rubat fully expected Konga to smash him next, but was struck by the beast's thoughtful treatment of him, and sympathized with the world's hatred of him. Planes soon came to carry out Rubat's execution, and Konga tore them from the sky, and brought Rubat to safety on his shoulder. They fled to a secret place in the mountains the former general knew about, where he lamented that he did not have Konga's strength to carry out his plans to bring his country to glory. Both reviled by society, they agreed to work as a team to create a nation where Konga would not be feared or hated, but an honored guest in the care of its ruler. A reconnaissance plane discovered them the next morning, and several tanks came up the mountain, oblivious of Konga's presence there. The ape trashed the tanks, and the soldiers inside were easily swayed to Rubat's side. Konga continued to destroy the assaulting military vehicles as they made their way to the capitol. Rubat spoke of his glorious plans of increased labor quotas, pressing women into factory work, conscripting men to the military and conquering the neighboring nations. Not okay with this notion, Konga set the would-be leader down, but the man quickly reminded Konga of his promise to give him a place to be safe and free, so Konga continued taking shells and destroying war machines. Soon, Rubat was in power and unopposed.

Now with all that he wanted at his fingertips, Rubat now considered Konga a nuisance, and set a trap to eliminate him. Outside the office, a man pleaded with Konga to see the truth, and that Rubat was an evil despot, but he could not be sure if Konga had understood. Soon, the new military autocracy's "President" Shol Rubat, invited Konga to a spot prepared for him in the mountains, where in reality, over 1,000 tons of nitroglycerine waited for him. Eager to avoid the blast, Rubat and his chief minister tried to flee from the mountain before it blew up, but eager for more time with his friend, Konga picked up the car before the ground exploded, and launched them all into the air. Konga caught the two men in his great palm, and returned to the city, where in Rubat's absence, free elections had been held. The man from the square declared that Konga would always be looked on with friendship and kindness in this new nation, finally giving him the one thing he had always wanted: a home.

"The Giant Bug"

One night in 1894, Dr. Dorik, who had ambitions of creating a world of giant supermen, he frantically tested his ridiculed size-controlling serum, which had so far only proven effective on insects. With a new, more potent dosage, Dorik dropped his insects into flasks of liquid, where one grew so large so fast that it broke free of the glass container and continued growing. No longer in control, Dorik was helpless against the many-legged menace. The serum soon wore off, as it always did, and the men who came in response to the commotion arrived to see Dorik dead on the floor. It seemed he had died of fright, but there was nothing in the lab more frightening than some little bugs.
