Godzilla: Skate or Die #1 is a comic book from IDW Publishing. It was published on June 12, 2024.[1]

Description

It's Australian skater punks versus Varan and the King of the Monsters in this thrilling debut issue by writer/artist Louie Joyce (A Fistful of Pain)! Four years ago, four best friends and die-hard skaters found the perfect location for a DIY skatepark. After months of hard work, they created the world’s sickest spot that they could enjoy for the rest of their lives… That is, until the ferocious Varan appeared in the middle of central Australia and started making a beeline for their beloved park. Why is Varan on a rampage? Why did Godzilla just appear off the coast? What does their beloved skate spot have to do with this? And most importantly…what are these punks willing to do to save it?[1]

Plot

Jimmy "Egg" Fry, a teenage skateboarder living in Port Kembla, Australia, dreams vividly of monsters, a flipped coin, the local skate park, ducks, and a shooting star. He tries to explain his dream the next day to fellow skater Sushila "Sushi" Sahax on the way to school, viewing it as a sign that he's finally going to master a trick called the "hurricane." Jules Wheeler greets them around a corner, so startling Sahax that she falls off her board. They discuss the impending field trip to a university open day and last night's earthquake. Sahax is nearly hit by an irate driver while skating across a crosswalk; though she's unharmed, the departing car runs over her board.

Out west, in the desert, the kaiju Varan bursts out of the ground.

Roland "Rolly" Nolan greets the trio at school with a spare board for Sahax. All are looking forward to the weekend's party celebrating the two-year anniversary of their skate park, the Coin Toss. Before getting on the bus, Fry has a run-in with a scowling boy named Beau; while on the bus, the four watch a skilled skater named Damo on his way to the park.

Dropping from the sky, Varan attacks the small city of Broken Hill, razing buildings and sending cars flying.

Fry and Sahax reminiscence about the night they discovered the space that became the Coin Toss, which they decided to explore by flipping a coin. Wheeler spots the car that nearly hit Sahax exiting off the highway. The open day proceeds uneventfully; at the same time, the driver, a general, enters a heavily-guarded facility, attends a briefing on Varan, and speaks with a scientist in a room with a machine that is glowing pink. On the bus ride home, a crushing Wheeler convinces Sahax to have her over after the Coin Toss party to show her a video game trick. The kids learns of Varan's invasion of Australia through a video posted online; Wheeler, though more familiar with kaiju than the others, isn't sure if she recognizes him. The bus screeches to a halt as it hits bumper-to-bumper traffic overseen by the military. The kids all receive evacuation alerts on their phones - and Wheeler sees that another kaiju is approaching the country, possibly "the big one," although she can't confirm it. They're all astonished to see that the Coin Toss is the point of collision for the kaiju.

Godzilla, having just shattered a large ship, continues swimming towards Australia.

Determined to save the Coin Toss, Fry forces open the bus doors and asks his friends if they'll join him.
