Gamera (ガメラ) is a giant, flying, turtle-like kaiju who will star in the upcoming 2023 anime series GAMERA -Rebirth-.

Development

For GAMERA -Rebirth-, Gamera was designed by Kan Takahama, who previously designed and modeled Toto in Gamera the Brave and designed Gamera for Katsuhito Ishii's 2015 short film.

Design

Gamera's appearence is heavily reminicent of the design from the 2015 Gamera short film, specifically in the monster's posture, carapace shape, and head shape. However, this Gamera is a dark greenish-blue in color, with bright blue-green accents on his spiked plastron. He has large, bright green eyes and a pointed snout, a longer tail, as well as large front "hands". Similar to the Heisei incarnation of the character, while flying, this Gamera's front limbs transform into flipper-like "wings", with bright blue jets of flame blasting out from the wings and where his hind limbs would usually be.

Origin

100,000 years prior to the main events of GAMERA -Rebirth- in 1989, Gamera fought against other kaiju, including Gyaos.

Reiwa era

GAMERA -Rebirth-

In the summer of 1989, after Tokyo was struck by Gyaos, Gamera saved elementary school students Boco, Joe, Junichi, and Brody from the creatures. Gamera went on to battle five varieties of kaiju in all, including the Gyaos and Jiger, though he received wounds.

Abilities

Flight

Gamera is capable of flight at great speeds, seeming to propel himself using jets from his limbs. He was able to outmaneuver several missiles from a naval fleet.

Fire-breathing

After charging up, Gamera is able to blast a fiery projectile from his mouth.

Physical abilities

Gamera appears to be a capable hand-to-hand combatant, and was strong enough to lift and toss Jiger.

• The depiction of Gamera's neck glowing when he uses fireballs bears some remembrances to an unused idea for Gamera the Guardian of the Universe (1995) by Shinji Higuchi, where Gamera would split his mouth open and emit lights from his neck when using Plasma Fireballs; this is also similar to the sequence of Godzilla's atomic breath by Higuchi in Shin Godzilla (2016).
• The depiction of Gamera to discharge electricity when he uses fireballs also correspond with that of Godzilla Earth and Godzilla Filius to use atomic breathes which is another protagonist monster appeared in the series by Hiroyuki Seshita.
