Trivia

  • "Axis Mundi" is the first episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to air in 2024.
  • The name of Operation Hourglass references the series' working title, Hourglass.[1]
  • The pocket knife Shaw lends to Hiroshi is a Higonokami manufactured by Nagao Kanekoma Factory. Its engraving reads "Registered trademark: Higonokami Sada Kanekoma" (登録商標 肥後守定かね駒).[a]
    • This presents a minor inconsistency with real life, as Shaw possesses the knife in 1962 while the aforementioned trademark was not filed until 1990.[2]
  • Godzilla's atomic breath is depicted as being flare-like instead of being a concentrated beam, much like in his titular 2014 film.

Cate Randa is the protagonist of the 2023 Monsterverse television series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Plot

G-Day

As the bus waited on the Golden Gate bridge, Godzilla appeared and crashed through the bridge, knocking the driver unconscious and leaving the bug hanging off the bridge. Cate attempted to evacuate the kids as Godzilla roared above her. She only got three of them out before Godzilla knocked a piece of rubble onto the bus and causing it to fall off the edge. Cate broke down and wandered past several men on the bridge, who ignored her to collect data on the damage caused by Godzilla.

Meeting Kentaro

In 2015 Cate Randa traveled to Tokyo. Before she could depart, two people in hazmat suits spray the passengers down to kill any parasites, . The man dismissed this as a false comfort that would not stop a monster attack like the one in 2014. His words and the decontamination cause Cate to briefly flash back to an encounter with soldiers wearing similar masks. In the airport, she paused at a sign on the floor indicating the Godzilla Evacuation Route, recalling being on a school bus with her students as Godzilla attacked the Golden Gate Bridge. At customs, she explains to the official that she's come to Japan to settle the affairs of her father, Hiroshi after his death in 2014. In Tokyo, she witnessed missile batteries and anti-Godzilla graffiti; her taxi driver, meanwhile, is convinced the Titans were all faked with CGI.

After arriving at her father's residence, Cate's mother Caroline Randa, who pushed Cate to go to Japan, called her and reprimanded Cate for not calling her immediately after landing. Cate entered the apartment and found a memorial to Hiroshi beside a wall of photos that included him with a woman and boy she did not recognize, and was confronted by both over her intrusion in their house moments later. Cate attempted to defuse the situation by telling them that Hiroshi is her father. The family, Emiko and Kentaro Randa, sat down with Cate to discuss the situation, but Kentaro was skepitcal of her claim and asked her to provide proof. Cate showed them pictures of her and Caroline with Hiroshi and informed them that Caroline had been married to Hiroshi for 30 years. Emiko asked Cate whether she knew what happened to Hiroshi, but Cate became upset, apologized for the intrusion, returned the apartment's keys, and left. Caroline called Cate after she left he building, but she attempted to dodge her mother's questions on what she found in the apartment. Their call was interupted when the phone relays an evacuation alert. She regroups with Kentaro and Emiko, who lead her to a subway shelter and reassure her that it's likely a drill. Emiko asked Cate if Hiroshi was with her during G-Day, but Cate tells her that he wasn't. Cate then experienced a flashback to the attack on the Golden Gate Bridge and caused her to panic and attempt to leave the shelter. Emiko manages to stop Cate and calm her down.

After beign given the all clear to leave, Emiko invited Cate to come back to their apartment for tea. Cate refused as she didn't want to spend more time with the woman her father was cheating with, but relented when Kentaro pushed that she hadn't gotten any answers from her brief trip. Kentaro takes Cate to Hiroshi's office where he allegedly programmed software for satalites. Kentaro had hoped to show her the good in their father, but it only reminded Cate of how Hiroshi was obsessed with his work. Feeling her way along a map on the wall, Cate found a safe behind it and unlocked it by combining her and Kentaro's birthdays with both of their mothers'. The safe contained a bag belonging to Bill Randa which contained several data storage tapes. She noticed the Monarch logo on the side of the bag, and remembered how she had spotted men wearing it during G-Day.

"Parallels and Interiors"

Cate watched as the Frost Vark continued to dismantle their plane and sadly called out to Du-Ho upon seeing his nearby corpse. Kentaro attempted to shoot a flare at the titan, but missed and the group all had to run into a nearby cave. The Frost Vark investigated the cave's roof, causing tremors that broke the ice underneath May's feet and forcing Cate and Lee to help her out while May was left lying on the ground barely keeping herself from screaming from the freezing water. After lee confirmed the Frost Vark had left, the group left the cave. While the others bickered, Cate spoke up about about how it was getting late and the temperature would drop at night, and asked where Lee was taking them with no resources. Lee stated they were heading northwest towards the coast as they were more likely to see people there, but Kentaro stated that he saw a spherical building from the plane. Cate and the others all stated they never saw the building so the group climbed a hillto see if they could spot it. While they were unable to see the building, Cate spotted some lights. Kentaro refused to go towards them however, stating the building he saw was much closer and behind some other hills. Seeing this, Lee decided it was best for Kentaro to go on his own despite Cate's protests.

As a snow storm blew in, Cate lamented letting Kentaro go, but lee reassured her he just needed to survive until they reached the lights. However, upong climbing a hill they found themselves in the valley the Frost Vark had attacked them in, Lee now blaming the lights on the monster. Realizing May wouldn't make it without being warmed up, Cate refused to move on despite Lee's protests about the nearby titan. After starting the fire a fire and setting Mei within a tent, Mei complained that her legs were hurting. Cate congragulated as her this meant she didn't have frost bite yet, but Mei wasn't as optimistic about her chances. Meiasked Cate to call her sister Lyra Mateo if she didn't make it and attempted to give Cate Lyra's number until Lee returned with research papers from Hiroshi. Lee asked whether Cate wanted to burn the papers to stoke the fire or keep them to learn as much as they could about her father, but Cate immediately told him to burn them. Lee obliged, only for the Frost Vark to appear. Cate and Lee helped Mei out of the tent as the Frost Vark burst up from underneath their fire and consumed it. Lee realized that the Frost Vark fed on heat, and using this information created a plan to start a bonfire with aviation fuel and Du-Ho's corpse. As Lee prepared, Cate attempted to comfort May, but May told Cate that they would eventually have to leave her and possibly Lee behind so Cate could survive.

Art Career

In 2014, Kentaro prepared his speech for his art debut with his sponsor Kimi, who scolded him for hesitating during a question on what inspired his art despite having months to prepare. Kentaro repsonded that art came from a place that was hard to process and to him it was just intuitive. Kimi stated that while she respected his process, her buyers would be more interested in who they were buying from rather over the art itself and told him to come up with an answer in the two hours before the show started. As Kimi left, Kentaro's mother Emiko approached her son and complimented her son over a promotional poster's praise of his art along and affirmed that she and his father were proud of him when he showed doubt in his work. After Emiko confirmed that Hiroshi would attend the show, Kentaro excused himself and went outside to photograph the poster. As he did so, May walked in front of him and confronted him over taking her picture. Kentaro confirmed it was an accident and pointed to the poster behind her. May read the show's name, "Parallels and Interiors" and stated it sounded pretentious, which Kentaro agreed with before deleting the picture. Kentaro questioned May why she didn't like her picture being taken and began flirting with her, to which May questioned if this was the real him and if there would be wine. Kentaro stated the wine would was cheap and pretentious, and offered to show her to a place with better whiskey despite the looming deadline for the show.

Meeting Cate

In April of 2015, Emiko found Cate Randa trespassing in her home and confronted her alongside Kentaro. Cate defused the situation by revealing she was Hiroshi's daughter. The family sat down with Cate to discuss the situation, but Kentaro was skepitcal of her claim and asked her to provide proof.

"Parallels and Interiors"

2015: Kentaro watched as the Frost Vark continued tearing apart the plane. As the titan turned its attention to them, he noticed a flare gun and dove for it against Lee's protests. He fired it at the Frost Vark and missed, but the shot distracted it long enough for the group to make it to a nearby cave. May and Lee reprimanded Kentaro for being reckless, and Kentaro attempted to defend himself until tremors from the approaching Frost Vark silanced all three of them. The tremors caused the ice underneath May to break, soaking her legs in freezing water and leaving her on the groun barely holding back her screams. Once the Frost Vark left and the group began moving on, Kentaro helped May up and asked if she was okay, but May angrily snapped at him that she was going to die of hypothermia and rhetorically asked is Kentaro was happy he came. As the group moved on, Kentaro requested May slow down, only for May to angrily tell him to speed up until Lee agreed with Kentaro so she could conserve her energy. Kentaro stated they should dry May off, but Lee responded that there was nothing to build a fire out of and that he had no idea if the Frost Vark was still in the area. Once Lee told the group they were heading towards the coast, Kentaro remembered he had seen a circular building from the plane, but nobody else had seen it. Kentaro confronted May as he assumed she had seen it and asked if she was lying because she was angry, but she denied seeing it and told him this was entirely about her hypothermia.

After climbing a hill to see what was nearby, the group was unable to see any buildings but Cate spotted some lights in the distance. Kentaro asserted that it must be behind some other nearby hills and that the lights might be further away. Seeing he wouldn't budge, Lee agreed to split up and let Kentaro go on his own. As a snowstorm blew in, Kentaro began hallucinating about May calling to him, eventually collapsing and seeing a hallucination of May lying down with him.

History

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Founding Monarch

In 1952,

In 1959, Lee Shaw was riding in a beat up car with fellow Monarch agents Bill and Keiko Randa, following a radiation spike towards an abandoned power plant. Arriving at a forest surrounding the plant, they don gas masks and discuss how this could prove their theory on "the network. While moving theough the restricted area, they are confronted by a young hunter who points his rifle at them, causing Shaw to draw his own pistol. Keiko defused the situation by telling the boy they were scientists wanting to study the radiation, and that the game the boy would make him sick. The boy retorts that the radiation was a fairy tale, and that his elders believed it was a conspiracy the government created to hide a hole they had burned into hell. Upon reaching the ruins of the power plant, Keiko found her Geiger counter detected no radiation, and the three removed their gas masks for the remainder of the journey. Upon reaching the plant, Keiko found that small radiation spikes were emitted but quickly faded away, as if it was absorbed by something. Lee suggested it was being eaten like other Titans had done. They then set off a series of charges, and are delighted to find chambers within the bedrock. As they're celebrating, a minor earthquacke hits the reactor, further confirming their find.

Lee declared they had to move quick to keep her from dying of hypothermia. As they moved on, Kentaro requested that May slow down, which Lee agreed with so she could save energy to fight the hypothermia. Kentaro further pushed that May should dry her legs, but Lee told him that they don't have the materials to build a fire and that the Frost Vark could still be in the area. Hearing this and realizing Lee had no knowledge that could help them with the titan, she angrily threw her bag into his hands and told him that maybe the documents could help them before yanking it out of his hands. Lee told her to be careful with the documents before Cate defused the situation by questioning Lee where they were heading with no supplies and night approaching. Lee told her they were heading northwest towards the coast as they were more likely to encounter people there. Jearing this, Kentaro remembered that he had seen a spherical building from the plane, but no one else had seen it.

Cate realized May wasn't going to make it if she wasn't warmed up, and refused to go on without doing so despite Lee's protests about the nearby titan. The two started a fire and used Hiroshi's research tent as shelter. Lee left for supplies, returning with snacks from Du-Ho's supplies and Hiroshi's research papers. Lee asked Cate if she wanted to burn the papers to stoke the fire or keep them to learn as much as they could about her father, but Cate immediately told him to burn them. • Shaw's debut in Godzilla: Awakening and appearance in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters marks the longest gap between two appearances of a Monsterverse character, with 9 years. He is also the first character in the Monsterverse to initially appear in a graphic novel before making a live action appearance.

Notes

  1. Shaw entered Axis Mundi in 1962 (between the ages of 37 and 38) and stayed there a week,[1] but due to time dilation, emerged in 1982. By 2015, his body had therefore only aged 70-71 years despite him having lived 90-91 years in surface time.

As they walked, Kentaro requested that May slowed down, but she told Kentaro that he needed to speed up until Lee agreed with Kentaro so she could save her energy to fight the hypothermia.

Kentaro stated that May needed to dry her legs, but Lee told him that they didn't have the material to build a fire and that he didn't know if the Frost Vark was still in the area.
