  • 28 April: Following the Treaty of San Francisco in 1951, the Allied occupation of Japan comes to an end. Full sovereignty is restored to the majority of Japan except for Iwo Jima and Okinawa, which remain under the administration of the United States until 1968 and 1972, respectively.
