"Awaken! Star Warrior" (目覚 (めざ)めよ! (ほし)戦士 (せんし),   Mezameyo Hoshi no Senshi) is the first episode of The Gransazers. Directed by Hirochika Muraishi and written by Toshimichi Okawa, it aired on October 4, 2003.

Plot

Hundreds of millions of years ago, a highly advanced civilization inhabited the Earth. Their greatest creations were the Ultra Star Gods, giant warrior mecha. However, a coalition of aliens, fearing humanity's increasing power, launched an all-out attack on the planet. Despite deploying the full brunt of their arsenal, the civilization was decimated.

In the twenty-first century, a delivery driver for Jet Express parked his motorcycle outside of an office building, skirting a security guard who was scolding him for parking illegally. Inside, he delivered a package to a businessman in the middle of a meeting in the nick of time. He then moved on to several other delivery locations, including a nursery and an apartment complex. On a one-way road on his way to his next destination, a pickup truck approached him head-on, but he jumped his bike over the vehicle before it could collide with him. The truck's passengers, two men, exited the vehicle and began arguing with the delivery man before breaking into a fistfight. As the man pummeled the drivers to the ground, a woman pulled up to him in an SUV and, believing the man to be the assailant, slapped him across the face. The two exchanged words for a moment, but were interrupted by the woman's passenger, an older man. The delivery man suddenly remembered he was on the clock for a delivery, and rushed to his motorcycle.

The woman, Mika Shido, and her passenger, who was in fact the famous archaeologist Professor Ichiro Horiguchi, pulled up to a dig site where they were mobbed by the press. Horiguchi initially ignored the shouting reporters, but stopped in his tracks when one asked if his discoveries of evidence of an ancient civilization were all just a ploy to promote himself. Horiguchi yelled out to the reporters that across Earth's three billion year-long history, a civilization existing before our own seemed natural. Meanwhile, a shadowy man watched a television report of the events from his hotel room.

Back at the dig site, Horiguchi detected a reading of something underground. After uncovering a rock tablet-like artifact, a gleeful Horiguchi ordered Mika to tell the reporters that the excavation was a failure. The delivery man from earlier, named Tenma Kudo, arrived at his destination: the hotel room of Misonogi, the man who was watching the excavation reports. Misonogi handed the man a small silver case, and requested that it be delivered all the way to the dig site at Kabuto Mountain in just two hours. Elsewhere, a woman spoke with someone on a cellphone, declaring Horiguchi's announcement was a lie, and that he had in fact discovered an Ultra Star God. Sometime later, Kudo pulled up to a gate outside the dig site, but was stopped by two security guards. Mika appeared on the other side of the gate, accusing Kudo of following her, and snagged the package from his hand after he explained his business there. Kudo climbed over the fence and chased her down, but she kicked him across the face, knocking him unconscious.

Mika brought the package to Horiguchi, who opened it to find a ringing satellite phone inside. On the other end was Misonogi, who told Horiguchi to use the phone to contact him going forward, due to its encryption. He continued that he believed there to be other parties interested in reviving Ultra Star Gods, before hanging up. Horiguchi explained to Mika that Misonogi was the sponsor of his research, and was necessary to his discovery of the Ultra Star Gods and "Gransazers."

Back outside the gate as night was falling, a still unconscious Kudo awoke to find a man standing over him. The man introduced himself as Ken Shido, the younger brother of Mika. Kudo tells him that he needs to meet with the professor to get his signature for the package delivery, and Ken sneaks him to a fence just outside Horiguchi's tent. Suddenly, a man in a leather trenchcoat leapt over the fence. Suspecting the man could be a thief, Kudo and Ken scaled the face, but tripped an alarm system. A gang of patrolling security guards ran into the trenchcoated man, surrounding him and pushing him to the ground. However, they were soon sent flying through the air as the man's hand began to glow with a strange symbol and he transformed into an armored warrior. Shouting "Remls Tornado," the man created a whirlwind with his hands which blasted away the remaining guards and destroyed Horiguchi's backhoe. Looking on nearby, Kudo took off his motorcycle glove to see a symbol glowing on his own hand. Noticing the symbol, the warrior abducted Kudo and leapt through the air, disappearing over Kabuto Mountain. Horiguchi and Mika arrived on the scene and were approached by Ken, who identified the warrior as a Gransazer and told them that Kudo had been kidnapped.

Back in his tent, Horiguchi contacted Misonogi on the satellite phone and told him of the Gransazer. Misonogi questioned why the Gransazer would have taken Kudo, to which Horiguchi replied that he too could be a Gransazer.

The next morning, Mika questioned whether the warrior which attacked the dig site could really be a Gransazer, not believing that a Gransazer could do evil. Horiguchi responded that the Sazer could be being controlled by another party seeking to misuse the power of the Gransazers. Mika also pondered if Kudo could be a Sazer too, believing that she would have detected his powers. She requested that Horiguchi allow her to investigate and sets off, telling Ken not to follow her. She ducked behind a rock formation and lifted her hand to the sky, revealing a glowing symbol which soon transformed into a mechanical device. Using the device, she transformed into the Sazer Mithras.

At an unknown location, Kudo awoke in a bed surrounded by the man from the dig site and two women. One of the women appeared skeptical of Kudo, but her accomplice assured her that his powers simply hadn't awoken yet. The man added that, with his powers, three Gransazers will have been gathered. A confused Kudo told the trio off before storming out of the room, but was followed by one of the women, Ryoko. Ryoko intercepted Kudo and, without warning, began to attack him. She kicked him to the ground and told him that if he is to be their companion, he must fight back. A device not unlike that used by Mika materialized on Ryoko's hand, and she transformed into Sazer Velsou. Using her ability Velsou Illusion, Ryoko lifted Kudo into the air with her mind and repeatedly slammed him against the floor. Before long, one of the devices materialized on Kudo's own hand, and he was enveloped in the power of Sazer Tarious. With a single punch, Kudo sent Velsou flying through the wall, then fled the building. Watching from nearby, Ryoko's companions speculated that Sazer Tarious belonged to the element of fire, and therefore must be destroyed. Outside, Mika observed Tarious fleeing from atop the building, concluding Kudo was a Sazer after all.
