In the real world
- Mayumi Okuwa is born on July 23 in Japan.
- Gamera: Super Monster is released to cinemas on March 20th, 1980. It is a commercial failure, and drives Daiei back into bankruptcy.
- Tsuburaya Productions concludes its final Ultraman TV series for 16 years, Ultraman 80. While the series is a commercial success, the franchise is put on a semi-hiatus to allow the studio to work on other projects, ending the Showa era of a series which intitially developed and grew from the Godzilla franchise. During the hiatus, several films and other media for the franchise is produced.
