- Daiei, the bankrupt film studio famous for its production of the Gamera films, is saved from liquidation due to being bought by Tokuma Shoten. However, a lack of any funding beyond that for simple maintenance means that no further Gamera films are made until 1980.

- The first episode of Ultraman Leo airs on April 12 in Japan.
- Evil of Dracula is released on July 20 in Japan.
