- 14 July: Tsuburaya Productions film Ultraman Story is released in Japan. It is the first film in the Ultra Series to consist primarily of new footage.
- 15 December: The Return of Godzilla is released in Japan.
- Godzilla vs. 3 Giant Monsters, the first licensed Godzilla video game, is released.
