Cryptocleidus (クリプトクレディアス,   Kuriputokurediasu) are giant plesiosaur monsters who first appear in episode 8 of Godzilla: The Series, "Leviathan."

Design

Cryptocleidus have the body of a plesiosaur with four fins, a long neck, two front legs with four claws, and two small fins on their tail. Cryptocleidus are red with the underside of their neck being gray. They have four spikes running down their back, as well as four spikes on their tail. The skull like head features a mouth full of sharp teeth, three spikes underneath the mouth on both sides, and green eyes.

Origins

Cryptocleidus were aquatic long-necked reptiles, or plesiosaurs, that went extinct at the end of the Cretaceous Period, 65 million years ago. However, it seems a number of the Cryptocleidus somehow survived extinction.

History

Godzilla: The Series

"Leviathan"

After surviving the extinction of the other Cretaceous marine reptiles, at least two Cryptocleidi lived deep in an ocean trench, and lived undisturbed until the discovery of the Leviathan Alien spaceship brought scientists from H.E.A.T. down to their level. One of the Cryptocledi attacked their vessel, but Godzilla came to defend them. Godzilla was able to fight off the Cryptocleidus, but not for long.

When H.E.A.T. left the sunken ship in an escape pod, the two Cryptocleidi converged on the pod, and were once again challenged by Godzilla. They worked together to try and defeat him, but ultimately, the Cryptocleidi were both subdued by a rock slide.

"Monster Wars: Part 2"

A Cryptocleidus was sent by the Leviathan Aliens from Site Omega on Isle del Diablo to eliminate H.E.A.T., who were approaching the island and battling the Giant Bat. Their battle raged on, and H.E.A.T. was able to emit a reverse frequency of the Bat's echolocation frequency in order to blind it. They then sent out a radar pulse to turn the Bat on the Cryptocleidus, which worked, allowing them to escape, but the Leviathan Aliens stopped the fight and called the monsters back to Site Omega. As they approached, H.E.A.T. abandoned ship in order to ride to Site Omega on the back of the unwitting Cryptocleidus. All the monsters were then sent into the world's major cities to cause destruction. The Cryptocleidus was sent to Hong Kong.

"Monster Wars: Part 3"

The Cryptocleidus continued its rampage until H.E.A.T. deactivated the Leviathan Alien control beacon. At that point, it began to attack Leviathan Alien vessels and was last seen being sent to the bottom of the sea by the alien capital ships.

Abilities

Amphibiousness

The Cryptocleidus are adept swimmers. They can also travel on land thanks to their front forelimbs.

Sonic vocalizations

In Godzilla: The Series - Monster Wars, the Cryptocleidus is shown to be able to make physically damaging sonic vocalizations, even while underwater.

Weaknesses

Both Cryptocleidi were easily buried underneath rocks after Godzilla destroyed some undersea rock formations.

Video games

Godzilla: The Series - Monster Wars

A Cryptocleidus was making its way toward the source of a Tachyon pulse emission in the Pacific Ocean by way of waters in or near New Jersey in the United States. It came face to face with Godzilla heading in the opposite direction. The Cryptocleidus attacked with sonic vocalizations, but was ultimately incapacitated by the irradiated reptile.
