The Megapede, also known as the Cicada (シケーダ,   Shikēda) in its adult form, is a giant insect monster who appears in episode 9 of the second season of Godzilla: The Series, "Metamorphosis."

Design

The Megapede has a long gray and red body with a light brown underside with yellow barbs. He has multiple legs, two pincer claws, and light green spots with light orange patches around them running down its body. His second and third segment have smaller green spots above the larger spots. The Megapede has multiple spikes running down his back, two spikes on his fourth segment, one spike on his sixth, seventh, and ninth segments, and five spikes on his tenth segment. His brown head has six eyes, four green eyes with dark orange patches around them, ​and two smaller white eyes, four spikes on his forehead, a large mouth with four mandibles, two smaller mandibles above two larger mandibles, and a dark brown bump on the top of his head.

As the name says, the Cicada looks more like a giant cicada and is mainly dark brown with a tan underside. His abdomen has two small spikes behind two larger spikes. His thorax has six brown and red legs, two pincer claws, two translucent wings, and a brown plate of armor. The Cicada's head is the same as the Megapede's, except it is now light brown and has six red eyes with dark brown patches around the larger eyes.

History

Godzilla: The Series

Metamorphosis

At first a massive centipede-cicada hybrid mutation, the Megapede suddenly appeared in the American Midwest. Attacking and feeding on crops, his actions gained the attention of H.E.A.T., who quickly arrived to investigate. After finding globs of toxic foam at attack sites, they ran into the creature as it attacked the Indiana State Fair. His exoskeleton was too tough for tranquilizers and laser fire, and soon he was on a rampage. Godzilla, however, arrived to do battle yet again! He fought the creature, fighting it as H.E.A.T. watched on. The Megapede managed to use his poison barbs to gain the upper hand.

As Godzilla removed the barbs, H.E.A.T. open fired yet again, distracting the Megapede. The monster was unable to see Godzilla charging and soon he was tossed through a huge roller coaster. An electrical generator then exploded, sending thousands of volts through the insect’s body and weakening him. As the monster king moved in for the kill, it spat a glob of toxic foam at his eyes. The reptile was forced into retreat, heading to the water where he could wash off the foam. Unable to stop the Megapede on their own, H.E.A.T, could only watch as he vanished beneath the ground, totally unaware that he would soon grow into the next stage of his life cycle.

After his initial brawl with Godzilla, the Megapede vanished beneath the ground and created a sort of cocoon. He then began to grow into his second life cycle, the giant winged Cicada! After finding his husk, H.E.A.T. was at a lose of where to start their search. While they were confused, the Giant Cicada flew to Chicago and perched himself on top of the John Hancock Center. He began to rub his wings together, creating an intense high frequency song that disrupted all the electronics of the city, in an attempt to draw a mate.

Unwilling to just stand by and watch, the Air Force flew in, firing missiles at the giant insect. The powerful weapons did little to hamper the creature and when H.E.A.T. tried to use electricity against him, it was revealed that the recent metamorphosis had negated the weakness of its previous form. A new plan was put underway to coat the Giant Cicada’s wings with insulating foam. Spraying the insect with it from a helicopter, the foam did its job, stopping the song the creature generated. In response, he reached up, snatching the chopper out of the sky with his large claw.

They managed to escape its grasp and land safely, but Godzilla was back for revenge. Rising from the waters of Lake Michigan, he charged down Michigan Avenue towards the John Hancock Center and brought the entire skyscraper down to get at the insect. Without the ability to fly, the cicada tried to escape, but Godzilla was hot on his tail. The two fell into Lake Michigan and began to do battle. Soon, Godzilla held the insect under the water until it stopped moving.

Abilities

Durability

The Megapede's armored body can withstand tranquilizer darts, laser weapons, and Godzilla's atomic breath.

Metamorphosis

The Megapede can metamorphose into the Cicada.

Foam

In both forms, the Megapede can produce a foam which can poison enemies if it gets in contact with their eyes.

Poison barbs

The Megapede possesses poisonous barbs that can shoot out from underneath his head.

Flight

As the Cicada, the creature can fly. By vibrating his wings at high speed, the Cicada can produce a high frequency signal that can disrupt telecommunication systems.

Claws

Both the Megapede and the Cicada possess large pincer claws used to slash at and stab targets.

Burrowing

As the Megapede, the creature can burrow.

Weaknesses

While the Megapede was vulnerable to electricity, it only annoyed the Cicada. The Cicada could no longer fly or rub his wings together after having insulating foam sprayed on them. Due to being a land-based insect, Godzilla was able to drown the Cicada by holding him underwater.

Roar

The Megapede reuses El Gusano Gigante and Mutant Rat roars.

Trivia

• The Megapede and the Cicada are an homage to Battra. Godzilla also fought the Megapede in a carnival with a Ferris wheel and underwater, very similar to Godzilla's two brawls with Battra in an amusement park and beneath the waves in the Philippines in Godzilla vs. Mothra.
• The Cicada is shown producing its song by stridulating its wings; however, real-life cicadas use vibrating drum-like tymbals inside their abdomens.
