Gamera the Guardian of the Universe (ガメラ 大怪獣空中決戦 is a Gamera: Daikaijū Kūchū Kessen, lit. "Gamera: Giant Monster Midair Battle")Gamera video game for the original Game Boy, also compatible with the Super Game Boy. It was released on March 3, 1995, as a tie-in for the film of the same name which released eight days later. Though the game was only released in Japanese, a partial English fan translation by TransBRC was distributed online in 1999.[1] A second, complete English fan translation was released by Stardust Crusaders on January 31, 2022.[2]
Gameplay
The game is essentially a turn-based battler, in a similar vein to the Pokémon games for the same console. Its battle system is similar to that of an RPG game, but is unrelated to the genre otherwise.
Characters can position themselves in four different areas of the arena, giving access to new attacks and changing the effectiveness of others. Most of the attacks rely on button combos, but the game provides a list of these combos.
Gamera's enemies are Gyaos, Guiron and Viras. Eventually, the game's final battle pits Gamera against a doppelganger of himself called "Fake Gamera."
The game features a multiplayer mode that lets players take turns battling each other on the same device as any of the game's four characters.
