TOHO Visual Entertainment, formally the Toho Co., Ltd. Products & Licensing Department[1] (東宝株式会社ライツ事業部, Tōhō Kabushiki Gaisha Raitsu Jigyōbu, lit. "Toho Co., Ltd. Rights Department")[2] is a division of Toho which handles various operations including home video distribution. It was preceded by a different Products & Licensing Department (映像事業部 Eizō Jigyōbu, lit. "Visual Department")[a] and the Digital Content Sales Department (デジタル・コンテンツ営業部, Dejitaru Kontentsu Eigyōbu)[3][4] which merged at the beginning of the 2023 fiscal year.[5] The former, also known in English as Toho Video prior to adopting the TOHO Visual Entertainment name, had released countless of Toho's films on home video since the 1980s, and published some books and video games.
Both the past and present Products & Licensing Departments have been presided over by Toho Managing Executive Officer Keiji Ota,[3][1] who also doubles as the company's Chief Godzilla Officer. As such, the original department was home to the Godzilla Strategic Conference, which was tasked with developing future projects for the Godzilla brand. Most directly, the department was credited with funding Kazuhiro Nakagawa's first three short films for Godzilla Fest. It is unclear whether the Conference was transferred to the present department.
The original Products & Licensing Department also provided theatrical distribution for anime films, which included all three entries in the GODZILLA anime trilogy.
