History
Giant Monsters Converge on Okinawa! Showdown in Zanpamisaki was a concept written by Shinichi Sekizawa and Jun Fukuda in the spring of 1973. That winter, a new draft would be written entitled Showdown in Zanpamisaki: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla by Sekizawa and Masami Fukushima. This new script would replace Garugan with Mechagodzilla, Mothra with a new monster, King Balgan, and add Gigan to the story.[1]
Shortly after conception, these proposed films were reworked into Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, with King Balgan being the basis for King Caesar and Gigan being removed entirely. The Garuga Aliens[2] would also later be reworked into the "R Aliens" by the next script,[1] who, in-turn, were retooled to become the Black Hole Planet 3 Aliens.
Plot
A race of malevolent, ape-like aliens, dubbed the Garuga Aliens,[2] seek to conquer the Earth and sell it to the highest bidding alien race. The aliens create a mechanical monster, Garugan, beneath Zanpamisaki and unleash it upon Japan. The combined forces of Godzilla, Mothra, and Anguirus intercept Garugan's attack, and must fight to protect the Earth.[1]
