Godzilla vs. Bagan (1991)
|
Godzilla vs. Bagan (ゴジラVSバガン is an unrealized proposal for the third entry in the Gojira tai Bagan)Heisei series of Godzilla films.[1] Pitting Godzilla against the unused antagonist Bagan from the cancelled Mothra vs. Bagan, the idea was eventually discarded in favor of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.
Plot
After recovering from the Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria, Godzilla battles the ancient evil kaiju known as Bagan.
History
Originally, Toho had planned to produce a tetralogy of interconnected Godzilla and Mothra films, beginning with 1990's Mothra vs. Bagan and followed by the tentatively-titled Godzilla 3 in 1991. However, the disappointing box office returns of 1989's Godzilla vs. Biollante caused these plans to fall through. Writer-director Kazuki Omori recalled that following the cancellation of these plans, Toho considered pitting Godzilla against the unused antagonist Bagan from Mothra vs. Bagan.[1] This too fell by the wayside as Toho opted to revive Godzilla's arch-enemy King Ghidorah instead for what ultimately became Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. Bagan would go on to appear as the final boss in the video game Super Godzilla, and was considered again as Godzilla's foe for the final entry of the Heisei series before being replaced by Destoroyah.
Trivia
- Godzilla vs. Bagan was also the title of an early proposal for the final Heisei film. Aside from featuring Godzilla battling Bagan, the two proposed films are not related.
