History

Production on Jellyfish Eyes Part 2 began on August 1, 2012, before post-production on the first film had concluded, and wrapped on September 12.[1][2] Most of the main cast from Jellyfish Eyes reprised their roles. Reshoots took place the following year. The trailer, available on the Criterion Jellyfish Eyes DVD and Blu-ray, indicated that a significant amount of post-production work had been completed by 2015. However, on June 30, 2020, Murakami announced the film's cancellation on his Instagram, as the COVID-19 pandemic had brought Kaikai Kiki Co. to the brink of bankruptcy.[3] He has since released 12 videos chronicling the project's demise called How I was Forced to Abandon the Production of Jellyfish Eyes Part 2, though he remains hopeful that he may be able to complete it at some point in the future.
