Scorpion Monster
|
The Scorpion Monster (サソリ怪獣 is an unused arachnid Sasori Kaijū)kaiju which was proposed for the 1992 Godzilla film that became Godzilla vs. Mothra.
Development
Concept art of the Scorpion Monster was completed by Ryu Hariken on December 5, 1991. A diagram shows the monster's proposed suit being operated by two actors facing toward its stinger.
Design
The Scorpion Monster highly resembles the Legion from the Heisei Gamera series (though the monster predates it), and draws obvious inspiration from scorpions. It has gold or yellow spiky body armor, eight eyes (four on its left side, and, assuming body symmetry, four on its right side), two claws, and six legs. It also has antennae, pedipalps, and a scorpion's stinger.
History
Godzilla vs. Mothra
What role the Scorpion Monster would have played is unknown. Other concept art presented alongside the Scorpion Monster depicts what appears to be a Mothra egg planted on Godzilla's back. However, the Scorpion Monster's connection to the egg, if any, is unconfirmed. The monster was likely an early prototype for Gigamoth, a mutant Mothra larva that was itself ultimately replaced by Battra.
