Godzilla vs. Gigan: The Return of King Ghidorah!
Godzilla vs. Gigan: The Return of King Ghidorah! (ゴジラ対ガイガン キングギドラの大逆襲！ is an unmade Gojira tai Gaigan Kingu Gidora no Daigyakushū!, lit. Godzilla vs. Gigan: King Ghidorah's Great Counterattack!)1972 Godzilla film.
History[edit | edit source]
The latest in a long line of proposed ideas for the twelfth Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Gigan: The Return of King Ghidorah! was also the third iteration of a concept begun by Kaoru Mabuchi's story for Godzilla vs. the Space Monsters: Earth Defense Directive. Shinichi Sekizawa was brought on to revise the concept and commissioned a draft titled The Return of King Ghidorah, which replaced Anguirus, Majin Tuol, and Megalon from Mabuchi's story with Rodan, Varan, and the new monster Mogu. Sekizawa refined the story into a third version titled Godzilla vs. Gigan: The Return of King Ghidorah, bringing Anguirus and Megalon back into the story while also adding a larval Mothra. Ultimately, the concept was trimmed down to just Godzilla and Anguirus battling Gigan and King Ghidorah, though many elements such as the Godzilla Tower were retained from the earlier versions. Sekizawa was given screenwriter credit on the finished film, with Mabuchi credited for his story for Godzilla vs. the Space Monsters: Earth Defense Directive. The finished film, released as a matinee for the Spring Toho Champion Festival, was originally titled Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah: Earth Attack Directive (ゴジラ対キングギドラ 地球攻撃命令) before Toho changed it at the last minute to Godzilla vs. Gigan, believing it made more sense to include the name of the film's new enemy monster in the title.
