A handful of designs were drawn by Shinji Nishikawa and have been featured in [[Shinji_Nishikawa:_Drawing_Book_of_Godzilla|his 2016 art book]]: one version features a beast heavily inspired by the real-life Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus) and a secondary variation incorporating elements from the Axolotl, the endangered Mexican Salamander. Nishikawa's designs also hinted that the proposed creature was to be operated by two-or-more suit actors.

Planned for Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon

The Giant Salamander (大サンショウウオ,   Ōsanshōuo) is an unmade salamander kaiju from the 1994 Toho film, Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon.

Development

Concept art of the Giant Salamander was created by Shinji Nishikawa, dated 12/11/93. Two diagrams show that the monster's suit would have been operated by at least two people, and would have been able to sit in an upright position.[1] The Salamander was scrapped due to concerns that two aquatic monsters—it and Kaishin Muba—appearing in the same film would be redundant, according to Nishikawa.[2]

Design

Shinji Nishikawa's concept art depicts the monster as a giant version of the real-life Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus), while secondary diagrams incorporate elements from the axolotl.

History

Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon

When Oto Tachibana is introduced, she would have battled the aquatic Giant Salamander and defeated it.[2]
