Godzilla vs. AstroGodzilla (ゴジラVSアストロゴジラ,   Gojira tai Asutorogojira) is an early concept for the sixth entry in the Heisei Godzilla series, and predecessor to Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.

Development

With the delay on the release of the TriStar adaptation of Godzilla, Godzilla (1994 film), Toho's initial plans to kill off the character at the end of what became Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II to make room for the American version shifted. Now having to continue the Heisei series, one of the ideas proposed for "Godzilla 6" was similar to The Return of King Ghidorah (Heisei), with a Showa Ghidorah-like alien monster named Emperor Ghidorah arriving on the planet to wreck havoc. However, due to the production of Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon having a similar monster, the Ghidorah-like enemy was discard.

Regardless, Toho continued to pursue an extraterrestrial foe for the King of the Monsters and the idea was retooled into an alien doppelganger for Godzilla. Shinichiro Kobayashi, writer of Godzilla vs. Biollante's original story, submitted a draft which built on this concept, though it made Godzilla's alien clone, now dubbed Crystal Godzilla, crystalline in origin [1]. Koichi Kawakita pushed to have MOGUERA included due to his fondness for the film The Mysterians, with Mothra also set to return. This concept was considerably more ambitious than the final product would be, featuring an army of giant alien dragonflies controlled by AstroGodzilla and Mothra as Godzilla's ally along with MOGUERA.

The lukewarm box office for Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon led to cost-cuts being taken. Over several drafts, such as Godzilla vs. NeoGodzilla and Godzilla Super Wars, the scale of the film was reduced with the villain's crystalline dragonfly minions being removed entirely and consideration to reuse Mechagodzilla and Garuda was proposed to save costs in making a new mecha [2][3].

Plot

Godzilla battles against an extraterrestrial clone of himself named AstroGodzilla, born from Biollante's cells which escaped into outer space, who leads an invading army to Earth. Crystalline formations crash land in Japan, which split open to reveal a swarm of crystalline giant dragonflies under the control of the new monster. This army of space insects attacks LittleGodzilla, with Godzilla arising to defend his adopted son. Despite his best efforts the insects abscond with the youngster and bring him to a crystalline tower and fortress being constructed at Mount Aso, with the insects' master doing so to lure Godzilla into a confrontation. AstroGodzilla additionally takes over the minds of LittleGodzilla and G-Force psychic Miki Saegusa, with G-Force having to team up with Godzilla and returning Mothra in a siege of the crystalline fortress. As the defense forces fend off the insect army, G-Force's newest mech MOGUERA, Godzilla, and Mothra storm the core of the fortress and defeat the invader to save Miki and Little.
