Daiei Film Co., Ltd. (大映映画株式会社 Daiei Eiga Kabushiki Gaisha), later renamed to Daiei Co., Ltd. (大映株式会社 Daiei Kabushiki Gaisha) and occasionally referred to as the New Daiei (新大映 Shin Daiei) in order to distinguish it from its predecessor, was a Japanese film production and distribution company. Daiei Film was founded in September of 1974 as a subsidiary of Tokuma Shoten, the recipient of Daiei's assets after it declared bankruptcy in 1971. The company's production and distribution departments were divided into four main subsidiaries in 1977:
- Daiei Film Studio (大映映画撮影所 Daiei Eiga Satsueijo), the successor to Daiei's Tokyo Studio
- Daiei Film Kyoto Studio (大映映画京都撮影所 Daiei Eiga Kyōto Satsueijo), the successor to Daiei's Kyoto Studio
- Daiei Film Distribution Co., Ltd. (大映配給株式会社 Daiei Haikyū Kabushiki Gaisha), the film financing and distribution division
- Daiei Video (大映株式会社映像事業部 Daiei Kabushiki Gaisha Eizō Jigyōbu), a home video distribution company[note 1]
The new Daiei produced a total of four Gamera movies: Super Monster through Daiei Film Distribution in 1980, Guardian of the Universe in 1995, Attack of Legion in 1996, and Revenge of Iris in 1999. It also tapped Toho's Teruyoshi Nakano to direct special effects for the science fiction movie Tokyo Blackout in 1987. Following the death of Tokuma Shoten and Daiei president Yasuyoshi Tokuma in 2000, Daiei was acquired by Kadokawa Shoten and folded into its video subsidiary to become Kadokawa Daiei Pictures in 2002.
