Toho Eizo Bijutsu Co., Ltd. (株式会社東宝映像美術 Kabushiki Gaisha Tōhō Eizō Bijutsu, lit. "Toho Visual Art Co., Ltd.") is a Japanese art company and former film studio owned by Toho Co., Ltd.
Amidst major restructuring of Toho in 1970, the company's Art Department, which had been established the same year as a replacement for the Art Division of their Production Department, was incorporated as its own company, Toho Bijutsu Co., Ltd. (東宝美術株式会社 Tōhō Bijutsu Kabushiki Gaisha, lit. "Toho Art Co., Ltd."), presided over by Kazuo Nishino. A year later, another short-lived department, the Visual Operations Department, was also separately incorporated as Toho Eizo Co., Ltd. (東宝映像株式会社 Tōhō Eizō Kabushiki Gaisha, lit. "Toho Visual Co., Ltd.") and presided over by Tomoyuki Tanaka. Toho Eizo, which was partially composed of personnel from Toho's defunct Special Technology Division, was placed in charge of producing special effects films for its parent company, while yet another subsidiary, Toho Pictures, would handle all other films. Godzilla vs. Hedorah, which finished shooting about a month before Toho Eizo's formation, was the final tokusatsu film for which Toho produced the effects themselves. Toho and Toho Eizo collaborated on the next Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. Gigan, with the latter shooting the effects. By Godzilla vs. Megalon, Toho Eizo completely took over production of the series.
In 1975, Tomoyuki Tanaka became the president of Toho Pictures, and by 1978, Toho Bijutsu president Kazuo Nishino had taken up Toho Eizo from him. Toho Eizo continued to produce special effects films into the early 80s, but management of them soon followed Tanaka to Toho Pictures. 1984's Bye-Bye Jupiter and The Return of Godzilla and 1987's Princess from the Moon were funded and co-produced by Toho Pictures, with Toho Eizo returning to special effects production. On June 1, 1988, Toho Eizo merged with Toho Bijutsu to form Toho Eizo Bijutsu. This incarnation of the company continued to produce the special effects for Toho Pictures into the 1990s, including on the remainder of the Heisei Godzilla series, Gunhed, Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon, and the three Rebirth of Mothra films. Toho Pictures completely took over shooting of the Godzilla series with Godzilla 2000: Millennium, though Toho Eizo Bijutsu still provided sets and props for the Millennium series. The company continue to work on films and other projects in various capacities, including art production on Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 1 and Shin Godzilla, and production of the short film Dream Challenge: Godzilla Appears in Sukagawa.
