Template:Kaiju Infobox UnmadeTransforming MechaGodzilla is an unmade Toho mecha that would have appeared in an early draft for the 1993 Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2.

Appearance

The Transforming MechaGodzilla's appearance is reminiscent of both the Showa MechaGodzilla and Heisei MechaGodzilla, with the addition of being able to split into seven different ships.[1] Eventually, this was reduced to just two vehicles, with MechaGodzilla's upper body becoming a jet, and its lower body becoming a tank.[2] This feature was reused, albeit heavily toned down through the use of the Garuda and MechaGodzilla fusing to create Super MechaGodzilla in the final film, and also inspired M.O.G.U.E.R.A. being able to split into the Land Moguera and Star Falcon for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla.

History

Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2 (Early Draft)

The Transforming MechaGodzilla's role was nearly identical to the normal Heisei MechaGodzilla's role in the finished film, however one of its individual vehicle forms would have battled two pteranodons early in the film on Adonoa Island. This MechaGodzilla would have successfully killed both Godzilla and Rodan later in the movie, but the Garuda would be destroyed and explode, causing Godzilla to be revived by the released radiation and destroy MechaGodzilla.[3]

Trivia

Transforming MechaGodzilla's S.H. MonsterArts figure, alongside the Showa, Heisei and Millennium MechaGodzilla figures.
  • The Transforming MechaGodzilla was likely scrapped due to how expensive and difficult it would have been to portray the various machines and their fusion into MechaGodzilla. Toho may have also wanted to avoid too much similarity to King Joe, a mecha created by Tsuburaya Productions which moves around and transforms in a very similar way.
  • The Kaiju Guide entry for Super MechaGodzilla in Godzilla: The Game references Transforming MechaGodzilla.
  • The early artwork poster for Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla 2 drawn by Noriyoshi Ohrai features the Transforming MechaGodzilla.[2] This is notable, in that it is one of the few instances of an unmade Template:Kaiju or unmade design for a Template:Kaiju appearing in a piece of official media for the completed product. Ohrai's depiction of Transforming MechaGodzilla is the same as the artwork for the mecha created by Shinji Nishikawa, indicating that the design used for the poster was the final design for Transforming MechaGodzilla before the character was redesigned into the Heisei MechaGodzilla.
  • As part of their new Tamashii MIX subline of S.H. MonsterArts figures, Tamashii Nations has created a figure of the Transforming MechaGodzilla under the name "MechaGodzilla (Poster Version)", which is set to be released alongside reissues of the standard SHMA Heisei MechaGodzilla and Kiryu, plus a Showa MechaGodzilla figure. Because the Tamashii MIX subline is set to feature figures with the ability to transform, it is likely that this figure will be able to split apart into different vehicles as originally envisioned. As a result, Transforming MechaGodzilla is the first unmade Toho Monster to receive an official merchandise release.
