The Luminous Fairies and Mothra (発光妖精とモスラ,   Hakkō Yōsei to Mosura) is a serialized novel written in 1961 by Takehiko Fukunaga, Shinichiro Nakamura, and Yoshie Hotta. It marks the first appearance of Mothra in any form of media, and was the basis for her debut film of the same name. It was originally serialized in Asahi Weekly in January 1961, then republished as a paperback in September 1994.[1]

Plot

An expedition to a quiet island in the South Pacific by a group of Rolisicans finds a marvel of modern science living among a native tribe: the presence of numerous tiny fairies called the Ailenas (アイレナ,   Airena), who follow and adore their goddess, Mothra. The expedition steals away the fairies, unaware that they have angered the island's goddess. Mothra hatches from an egg and travels to Japan in her larva form, eventually spinning a cocoon and metamorphosing into her imago form, and then flies to Rosilica, destroying New Kirk City and rescuing her fairies, before returning to the island to live out her life in peace.
