"Foodlosslla: What Should Humanity Do!?" (フードロスラ どうする!?人類篇,   Fūdorosura: Dōsuru!? Jinrui-hen) is a Japanese kaiju-themed web commercial directed by Takashi Yamazaki for food company Ajinomoto. It was released on March 14, 2024 (JST).[2] The commercial features a special task force confronting the titular Foodlosslla, a living amalgamation of food waste who has appeared in Tokyo.

Plot

Crowds of people panic and flee through the streets of Tokyo. A news reporter mentions the emergence of a kaiju dubbed "Foodlosslla" near Tokyo Tower. As Foodlosslla begins to take shape, the TV shows a man mentioning that "the grief of 2.44 million tons of annual household food waste" was likely the cause of the monster's birth. Foodlosslla then grabs hold of Tokyo Tower as he moves forward, before bringing his hand out and raining wasted food down on the fleeing civilians, adding to their terror. Following this, the monster begins to weep, and his tears shower the reporter, causing her to panic. Then, three officers of the Rescue Food Loss Special Investigation Team, clad in orange suits and helmets (which have an "R" on the front of them) armed with guns appear, and charging their weapons to maximum level, fire green lasers at Foodlosslla. However, as the blasts strike the monster's hand, the trio find that their attack was ineffective. The scene changes to a black screen which reads "What should humanity do?!"

Then appears a group of five Rescue Food Loss Special Investigation Team officers to confront the monster, each wearing white aprons with orange rims and bearing seasonings and cooking implements. Orange text with white rimming appears, which a voice then reads aloud: "What's important is a little seasoning and a little creativity." Following this, Foodlosslla bellows once again, and the screen reads "Now let's fight against Foodlosslla."

Development

A casting call looking for extras to appear in a Takashi Yamazaki-directed commercial for a "major food manufacturer" was posted by the Tochigi Prefectural Film Commission on December 7, 2023.[7] Said manufacturer was revealed to be Ajinomoto on March 5, 2024, when the company tweeted a clip which showed the commercial's starring monster Foodlosslla and gave a March 14 release date.[8] Two more videos, posted on March 6 and 7, showed further shots of Foodlosslla.[9][10]

Production

As of the aforementioned casting call, shooting was scheduled to begin on December 27, 2023.[7] All of the outdoor portions were shot at Ashikaga Scramble City Studio in Ashikaga, Tochigi, Japan.[11]

Director Takashi Yamazaki personally created the Rescue Food Loss Special Investigation Team's equipment, including their guns and belts, using supplies from the hardware store.[6][12] For the scene where Foodlosslla sheds pieces of itself on fleeing civilians, prop food items were dumped on the actors. Similarly, a reporter drenched in Foodlossla's tears was really splashed with water.[11] The commercial's visual effects were advertised as being created by the same team as Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One;[7] as is standard for his films, Yamazaki served as his own VFX supervisor and the effects were produced by Shirogumi.[6][12]
