What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? (大怪獣のあとしまつ is a Daikaijū no Atoshimatsu, lit. "Giant Monster Cleanup")2022 tokusatsu kaiju comedy film written and directed by Satoshi Miki, with visual effects by Koichi Noguchi and practical effects by Hiroshi Butsuda. Funded by the "DAIKAIJU" Film Partners (consisting of Shochiku, Toei, Toei Animation, JR East Marketing & Communications, J Storm, Shochiku Broadcasting, and Kodansha) and produced by Toei's Tokyo Studio, it stars Ryosuke Yamada, Tao Tsuchiya, Joe Odagiri, Toshiyuki Nishida, Gaku Hamada, and Hidekazu Mashima. Toei and Shochiku jointly released the film to Japanese theaters on February 4, 2022.[3]

Development
What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? was announced on February 26, 2020 along with its writer-director Satoshi Miki and stars Ryosuke Yamada and Tao Tsuchiya, with a projected release date sometime after 2020.[10]
On October 27, the film's release was confirmed to be scheduled for 2022.[11] A countdown timer launched on the film's official website on June 24, 2021,[12] culminating in a press release on July 1. The film's key art and a teaser trailer were released, along with a brief description of the film's plot, the names of the two main characters, and the reveal of former Godzilla series modeler Shinichi Wakasa's involvement.[4]
On October 11, the film's Twitter account began a three-day counter,[13] leading to another announcement on October 13. Three new cast members were revealed, along with a brief trailer and release date.[3]
A 'special video' and new promotional image of Ryosuke Yamada in character as Arata Obinata were released on November 12.[14]
Yet another counter began on Twitter on November 25.[15] Four days later on November 29, a new trailer and poster were released along with the film's staff and thirteen additional cast members.[16]
Five character posters were released on December 6.[17] The film's official site was updated around the same time, adding story, characters, cast, and staff sections.
Another special video was released on December 29, featuring new footage from the film intercut with comments from Ryosuke Yamada.
An "ultra premiere event" was held on January 9, 2022 in celebration of the film's completion, with guests Satoshi Miki, Ryosuke Yamada, Tao Tsuchiya, Joe Odagiri, Gaku Hamada, and Toshiyuki Nishida.[18]
Four new cast members—Rinko Kikuchi, Fumi Nikaido, Shota Sometani, and Yutaka Matsushige—were revealed on January 16.[8]
Production
Shooting on What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? began March 11, 2020, but was halted at the end of the month[19] due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[20] Shooting resumed close to a year later on January 30, 2021, and concluded on March 7.[19]
Theatrical releases
Box office
What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? opened third at the Japanese box office, grossing ¥170.7 million in its first three days of release and selling 124,524 tickets.[22] Toei and Shochiku ceased reporting both numbers in its second weekend, which saw it fall to seventh place.[23]
Reception
What to Do with the Dead Kaiju? received negative reviews from both audiences and critics.[24]
