"FORESTER: The Attack" (FORESTER 進撃,   Foresutā: Shingeki) is a 2014 Japanese tokusatsu television commercial directed by Shinji Higuchi and written by Takamasa Yamagata, with special effects by Katsuro Onoue. Produced by Toho Pictures and AOI Pro.,[1] it paired Toho's then-upcoming live-action film adaptations of Attack on Titan with Fuji Heavy Industries' Subaru Forester car model. The commercial premiered on January 24, 2014, over a year and a half before the first Attack on Titan film released in theaters, and gave the earliest look at the films' Titans.[2][3]

Plot

In the mountains within Wall Maria, a person driving a Subaru Forester 2.0XT is chased by two Titans. As they drive up a hill, the Colossal Titan emerges from the ground directly in front of them.

Production

The commercial's special effects footage was shot at Toho Studios[5] by largely the same staff team who would later do the same for Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 1 and Part 2.[1] The pair of Titans which menace a Subaru Forester were portrayed by actors with prosthetic appliances,[6] while the Colossal Titan was portrayed by a 2-meter-tall puppet.[5] Designed by Takayuki Takeya and built by Yoshihiro Nishimura,[1] the puppet took a month to complete and required seven people to operate: one inside the body for overall movements, three moving its head and arms from the outside, two controlling wires to change its facial expressions, and one controlling wires to move the fingers on its left hand.[5] Other elements, like the chunks of earth which fly into the air when the Colossal Titan emerges and the smoke which emanates from the Colossal Titan's body, were also created practically.[7]

Both the Titans and environmental elements were filmed in front of a green screen[5][6][7] so that they could be composited over footage of the Subaru, which was shot on-location in Col de Turini, France, and the Flinders Ranges in Australia.[2]
