Development
On November 1, 2024, at the conclusion of Godzilla Minus One's first Japanese television broadcast, held on Nippon TV's Friday Road Show, a new film helmed by director/writer/VFX supervisor Takashi Yamazaki was announced to have been greenlit.[2]
During the Visual Effects Society Awards on February 11, 2025, Yamazaki confirmed that work on the film's screenplay and storyboards was underway. He also estimated that the film's budget will be higher than Minus One's.[3]
On April 14, Bloomberg reported that Toho will produce a sequel to Minus One.[4] Despite this, the document cited by the article, Toho's Mid-Term Plan 2028, makes no mention of such a sequel.[5] The claim was nonetheless reiterated in a second article from Bloomberg on July 17, this time attributed to Toho International President Koji Ueda. It added that the film could be released "as soon as" 2026, and that Toho is also planning "a potential sequel" to Shin Godzilla and another project centered on Southeast Asia.[6]
Around July 27,[7] the website yamazakimovie-extra.jp was launched, featuring casting calls for volunteer extras for Yamazaki's next "Blockbuster Monster Movie," a working title previously used by Minus One. The site also confirmed that the film would be financed by Toho and produced by Yamazaki's longtime production house of choice, ROBOT COMMUNICATIONS.[8]
The project's title and a logo teaser illustrated by Yamazaki were revealed on November 3 (JST), during the opening ceremony of Godzilla Fest 2025.[9] Subsequent announcements revealed that it will be co-produced by TOHO Studios and its visual effects will be created by Shirogumi.[9][10] The same day, The Hollywood Reporter's coverage of the announcement asserted, "According to insiders, the new film is being positioned not just as a sequel [to Minus One] but as a statement piece" and "Yamazaki and Toho are reportedly locking in a late-2026 global release window".[11]
The film's Japanese and North American release dates along with a new teaser poster were revealed on January 9, 2026.[12] The same day Kazuaki Kishida, planner and producer of Minus One, announced on X that he will serve the same roles on Minus Zero.[13]
When speaking with Gold Derby following the release of the teaser trailer for the film, Takashi Yamazaki cited Cloverfield as the influence for Godzilla appearing near the Statue of Liberty, specifically the shot of the Statue of Liberty's severed head being thrown into Manhattan by Clover.[14]
Production
Shooting involving extras was scheduled to take place in Japan in Ibaraki Prefecture's Tsukubamirai on August 30–31 and September 1 and 3, Kasama on September 5, and Kuji on September 14.[8] Filming also reportedly took place in New Zealand and Norway in late 2025.[11] Carrying the "Filmed For IMAX" label, the movie was shot on IMAX-certified cameras, a first for a Japanese production.[15]
Marketing
On April 14, 2026, Takashi Yamazaki appeared at GKIDS' "State of the Industry" program at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, confirming the film to be a sequel to Godzilla Minus One and presenting behind-the-scenes footage and the film's first teaser trailer.[16][15] English and Japanese versions of the teaser were premiered on YouTube later that day on the Toho MOVIE Channel and GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO, respectively.
